This is shaping up to be a great miniseries.
I saw the "Making of" tonight on HBO

The book was outstanding.

I saw the "Making of" the other day and I must say it looks pretty cool. I think its a nice touch to get some of the original guys in the film. Its almost like Audie Murphy and To Hell and Back.

Affirm. Another group to live vicariously through although they were not utilized properly IMO.

Sure -The higher ups have no idea how to implement RECON and STA units.
Thus, you get sent out on some retarded ass missions.

Comes down to the Command Element figuring it out.

Sad .

They don't call it "The Crotch" for nothing. Kind of akin to not having hydraulic fluid leaking on you in a 46. If it's not then time to exit earlier than planned.

Celer...Silens...Mortalis, killer.

Watched it, disappointing on 2 points. The over the top racism, and the CSM who was a martinet. Neither is believable... Not in an Infantry unit anyway.
And they had MRE boxes in every fucking scene.

Command Element? CEs only exists in MAGTFs, this was a Recon Battalion full of 0321/69s and 0302s who had gone through the whole Recon pipeline.

Yep, don't forget to mention though that, that was after the Army General who was the CFLCC ordered I MEF to turn around and go 50 miles to the rear after seizing Hantush and staying in Ad Dywanyia for almost 5 days.

Are you insane some of the craziest stupidest shit I have ever seen has come out of infantry units. That shit was spot on for most Mech infantry units I have been a part of. I have had two over the top CSMs who were down right fucking scary.

Seriously I have never been a Marine but for Army Mech infantry units that behavior is spot fucking on at least in the 1st CAV when I was in.

The truest thing ever is the porno mags hell some companies deployed with a box of community porn mags for their company.

My issue is with all the "first to Baghdad" stuff the USMC publicity machine has cranked out.

Not the people that were there.

Because we all know who was first to Baghdad, and first through Baghdad, after killing more than a divisions worth of Republic Guard troops, that the Air Force had missed most of their armored vehicles, Right?

The Marine Corps does not have CSM's. We have SgtMaj's in the tactical billet & one SgtMaj of the Marine Corps. We also have MGySgt's in the technical billets. All are E-9s. Recon is not line or mech infantry & thus their mission is not the same on paper. All of Marine Corps line infantry is the equivalent to what the Army calls light infantry. Our infantry is not catagorized the way the Army does it. We do it all from small boats (IBS & rigids), Amtracks (amphibious tractors or tracks), helos, CAT with the buggies & whatever else the Regt or Div CO wants. In this case 1st Recon Bn (or Div Recon since they work for the 1stMarDiv) was conducting the mission as ordered by MajGen Matthis, the 1stMarDiv Co at the time. Their mission was techically similar to what we train for...to reconoiter out to borders of the arty fan (or in the case of our former Force guys, beyond the horizon type ops for the MEF CO) & report the findings, but in this case it was kind of adhoc in its nature as our killers don't want to be confined to hummers in convoys ahead of a bunch of metal cans with tires & tracks.

They wanted to jump in before the start of ground ops & see what they could see. Basically, they wanted to do the job they were trained for. I know as well as anyone that ops don't always go as planned & certain assets are not used to exploit the potential of its operators but a doctor doesn't want to just make house calls all day either.

In all the battalions I have been a part of the CSM was the baddest scariest NCO in the battalion. Who is the baddest scariest NCO in Marine Battalions. Some folks on this post say that they don't have mean SgtMaj in the Marines. Which kicks ass because I swear to god most CSM in Army units really are that mean and nasty.

I am not sure of your point, I MEF was always a supporting effort to 3rd ID, despite this we attacked and destroyed 51st Mech, 11th and 18 infantry division of the 3rd Corps and the Al Nida, Medina and Baghdad infantry division of the Republican Guard. And despite being 1 division and having gone through over 6 divisions of the Iraq military we were waiting on the banks of the Diyala for the CFLCC to order us to attack across the river. We all knew the Army CFLCC wasn’t going to allow the Marines to enter the city prior to the Army. There is was allot of speculation that was one of the reasons I MEF was told to turn around and wait in Dywanyia for almost 5 days to “synchronize our movement with the 3rd ID.” Gen Conway said we didn’t need the pause; however the CFLCC ordered us to

What unit was first to Baghdad?

What unit was first intro Baghdad, in force?
Link Posted: 7/15/2008 9:26:05 AM EDT
Yah, 3rd ID was there first. What do you expect after the Army CFLCC ordered the Marines to stop several times in order to synchronize the simultaneous attack into Baghdad. Than when 1st MarDiv was waiting to launch the simultaneous attack from the east, we were told the 3rd ID had launched it thunder runs into the center of the city. Neither Gen Matthis nor Conway are anything like Patton was, they obeyed the direction of the CFLLC.

I know you think we were so slow, but you can easily ask why TF Tripoli was formed to take Baji, Samarra, and Tikrit? When 4th ID was too slow getting to their jumping off positions, the 1st MarDiv formed had to form a TF with 1st, 2nd, 3rd LAR, 5 Battalion, 11th Marines and a few odds and ends and less than a day after be notified to head north and wait for 4th ID.

I don't think the Marines were slow.

I do think the USMC publicity machine is well oiled, and ready to play up anything that Marines do and downplay what other services accomplished.

I goes back to WW-I.............. the USMC publicity machine talking about devil dogs, the Marines stopping the Germans from advancing, and the Germans remarking about the accurate rifle fire of Marines......................

All the Marines were part of the US Army 2nd Infantry Division, which was half Army and half Marine.

Or the battle of Pellileau. Find out what the US Army 81st Inf division said about it, they were there too.

This is not meant to be a "Marine Publicity" bashing thread. Marines are Marines & we'll leave it at that. There is no need for this jealousy. Just ask yourself why a high ranking flag officer from another service stated, "America does not need the Marine Corps...America wants the Marine Corps." I like to use the saying that we all, no matter the branch, bleed the same color & are all on the same team.

know what the army 81st Div did at Peleliu, and that was neccassy because Gen Rupertus basically screwed up. Additionally I know how Puller destroyed the 1st Marines.

Belleau Woods is actually a pretty interesting story how the history was written by the reporters. One of the reporters who attended the planning briefs and wrote his story prior going forward with the Marines, he left instructions to send them if he was killed when he was wounded and thought killed his stories were sent. Because Pershing’s orders to his censors was to censor stories about soldiers the reports were not stopped and went to the paper in Chicago, and since it was the only news that anyone was getting it become history, whether it was fact or not.

So instead of blaming the Marines for being better at media relations, why not attempt to emulate and wage the media war more effectively? I know I have worked with the press numerous times in the recent past. The Marine Corps position is to get the reporters out with the Marines and they will sell the Marine Corps story, even the lows of the story help sell the story.

I haven't read the book yet, and I was wondering, where is the Sgt. Major
supposed to be from?

He has the most fucked up accent I've ever heard.

When he had the men in formation, he said "America is watching" and he
pronounced America like this: " Uh-mur-i-kee ".

He also blasted Sgt. Patrick for his long "moo-staysh hurrs".

Pfft. Completely believable in my opinion. Been there done that. You have shit birds in every unit. Yes, even Recon/Force Recon.

Sticks to the book and a great show. Watched a repeat of the first episode that aired Sunday last night.

While that may be true in general of the Battalion, the platoon in question had several team members who were "paper Recon Marines" and had not attended BRC. Some were straight 03's that were attached to supplement the platoon.

I don't doubt it I read the book a few years back, seem like a good read. However, it like many books only tells the story from the perspective of the protagonists. What a junior or solider thinks about the whys of operations can be severally divorced from reality. Sometimes you cannot get an accurate picture of occurrences from the level of the company or even Battalion they may be able to tell you what happened in their piece of the fight, but may lack SA on the big picture.

Additionally I have found that many on the lower levels of command who constantly say everyone above them is fucked up could not really do any better themselves if they were put in charge. On a whole most units aren’t really as bad as you would be lead to believe by listening to the grousing of the junior troops. Sure you have your exceptions, but most part it’s the lack of SA, understanding or experience that leads to complaints.

What was familiar to me yet still scratching my head was Lt. Fick.

Viola....Nathaniel Fick !!!

Author of "One Bullet Away..the making of a Marine Officer"

I'm really liking this miniseries.

Go Recon Marines !!!

However, my heart belongs to 0331's

My problem with it is that it looks very similar to Heart Break Ridge where the unit is made up of a bunch of misfits more than professionals. Not Recon myself but being near them at Camp Schwab I found them to much more serious that either this series or Heart Break Ridge portrayed them.

I was never a Marine, nor did I play one on TV, but I can remember my Marine friends saying that often times they would send mild troublemakers and high energy but immature troops over to recon to straighten them out a bit and make them better Marines.

Besides, what fun is it to watch a movie about a bunch of Marines playing by the rules and always having their noses in manuals, and being consumate professionals? People want to see movies where soldiers and Marines are a bit quirky and eccentric. It makes for a better story.

Hell I can remember wathing a group of Marines waiting for their ride to Afganistan. One group was embroiled in a murderous snowball fight, some were playing cards, a few reading, and others doing PT. We decided the Marines having the snowball fight were more fun to hang out with and joined the snowball fight. It was all fun and games until a Lt Col got nailed in the grape with an iceball. Then it was all assholes and elbows running for cover!

Read books......watch movies........listen to Marine sons version of an Iraq experience (Dismount and up Gunner)

All equates to a very realistic miniseries.

Because we all know who was first to Baghdad, and first through Baghdad, after killing more than a divisions worth of Republic Guard troops, that the Air Force had missed most of their armored vehicles, Right?

There are troublemakers in Recon as there are in any other unit but Recon is volunteer except for 3rd Recon Co. at Camp Schwab a while ago (it was not practical to send very many qualified Recon men to Oki to fill their ranks for non-accompanied & accompanied tours in a Div mainly made up of UDP units). Maybe a long time ago but Recon is made up of the most highly motivated & squared away Marines with specialized training so I can't see nasties being sent there for straightening out. That's what office hours or IPT is for. Recon is made up of assets, not liabilities.
