Fellow deplorables, I've decided I want to get myself an AK in 7.62x39, just a standard AKM pattern nothing crazy.
What does Arf think of DDI AKs? If not them what others would you recommend? Will also need a decent trash can to put it in so it doesn't contaminate my ARs. |
|
I really like the older Arsenals. Bulgarian made, forged receivers, Steyr chrome lined barrels. Built like a tank.
|
|
Buy whatever you can find cheap and go have fun at the range.
They're all shit guns, no sense spending real money. |
|
Don't buy anything that says IO on the side of it.
Buy a WASR-10 if you want something nicer buy from Arsenal. I'm hoping they lift the trade sanctions on Izhmash and we can get cheap Saigs again. |
|
Not buying an Arsenal, too expensive.
WASRs alright? They can be had cheapish around me. |
|
Arsenal's are popular, expensive, and have a lot of quality control problems.
Find a nice Yugo M70B1. The are heavy, chromed, and a work horse. |
|
Buy an unmolested (no 922r BS) AK pistol such as a draco or an Zastava m92.
|
|
|
My WASR has been a pretty good gun. 5-6 thousand rounds with no malfunctions. 4moa off a ruck.
The prices now are cray cray |

Do your homework on current US made AKs, many have cast trunnions and most all have sourced barrels. If I was going to be a one and done AK owner I would look for the older imports like the chi-coms or older builds like those from Ohio Rapidfire or Arsenal. The Yugos are OK but I never really warmed to them. If you don't mind going the brace route the CAI Romanian Draco is a 100% AK and as it's a pistol there are no 922r issues to deal with. It actually comes with a brace (effective but ugly) but I did a side folder brace because I already had most of the parts to do it. https://s26.postimg.org/jnrgr6x4p/DSCN5583_2.jpg https://s26.postimg.org/hx8fppfll/DSCN5584_2.jpg View Quote QFT, best option out there IMO Other than that, WASR, Yugo (OPAP preferred if you can find one), or Vepr (my pick if you're gonna get a full sized) |
|

If you don't want to pay for an Arsenal, newer WASRs (post 2008 or so) are a great. Many old ones are fine too. Definitely try to check it out in person before buying.

DO NOT BUY A RAS47
If you want traditional, get a WASR. Or an N PAP, either fixed or folding stock. If you want to spend some money, get an Arsenal in your preferred flavor. |
|
romanians are decent but kinda crude i guess
hunarian/polish/yugo are more refined |

If you can build one Apex has some good Yugo kits with barrels in stock. Both underfolder and fixed stock.

Older Chicom is the route I went. Picked up a NIB double underfolder last year for my Birthday. It has one of the best triggers I've ever felt in a rifle. Highly recommend but they are not cheap. If I get another one, I'd just build it myself. |

Arsenal , Vper , Saiga if you can find one . Romanian Draco converted to rifle is great , have one and been running awesome .

View Quote I was considering a RAS at first until I started reading. I was interested in DDI because of the CHF trunnion and what seemed like a good spec sheet, but the AKOU test didn't seem too great with the extractor problems. I might got WASR to just get the classic look and something that at least has a decent track record. The only thing I'll ever add to the AK in question will be a sling so I'm not looking to go full operator with it. |

Best from the top
Arsenal(Bulgaria) MOLOT/VEPR(Russia) FEG (Hungary) RADOM(Poland) Saiga(Russia) ZASTAVA(Serbia) MAADI(EGYPT) ROMARM(Romania) Another one to look into before buying an AK is the Vz-58 made by Cz. |

I have a forged reciever Arsenal and I have a WASR-10. They are both great rifles, but honestly I just like the WASR-10 a lot better. It has never failed me (not that the Arsenal has either), it is lighter and for some reason I just dig it a lot more than almost any other firearm I have. If it all went to hell tomorrow, I'd have the WASR with me.

Based on AK4774 Operators Union and their torture tests, and my own experience, I would recommend in no particular order:
Arsenal Wasr Chinese Ak's Palmetto States AK (if you want American) Molot/Vepr |

If you just want an AK style in 7.62x39, consider a VZ 58. Awesome guns.
VEPR is heavy but great quality and decently priced. Best value would be a yugo M92 PAP pistol and SBRing it. Should still be $1k or less after stamp, stock, and a few 922r parts. Arsenal is good, but pricy. IMO they are not worth the premium over the other options I mentioned. |

I would avoid all AK's that have formed steel receivers, maybe go for something with forged aluminum receivers. Also if you can find one with a DI gas system, that's what you want, preferrably chambered in 5.56x45. Free floating barrels have been a nice improvement, and something with a top rail so you can mount a nice optic.
That's the AK you should buy. |
|
I have the Romanian SAR-1 (pre WASR) which is not sophisticated, but pure & simple like Kalashnikov AK was meant to be... Ugly, but it always works great with never a fumble or choke...
I have two Saiga full conversions (one 7.62 & one 5.56) and they are all you would expect of Russian AKs made on the same factory as their .Mil guns... VERY well made... As others have said, stay away from the USA AK (at least for now... ) |
