Is this easily done? Should I do this myself? or leave it to a professional?

After we had our house built the wife was on me about getting the duct work and furnace cleaned and I finally gave in and paid a company $400 to come do it. They got all the drywall dust out and guess what? One of the drywall guys had dropped a roll of drywall tape into my furnace where it was slowly being unrolled. I'm  lucky that it didn't start a fire. In my opinion it was a good $400 spent.

Newer or older furnace? 70%? 80%? 90+%?

Exactly what do you want to clean on it?

Are the burners sealed or open type?

Newer Furnance 4-5 yr old home. It's a Carrier Forced air furnace. Nothing is wrong with it they just say it should be cleaned every year. It's never been cleaned. Local guy wants $90 to do it. i think the burners are open.

Open burners. Here is how to clean it.

1. shut off power AND gas to unit.
2. use a long handled brush to clean off burner holes.
3. use vacumn with long attachment to carefully vacumn up loose junk.
4. take a air compressor with wand attachment and while running vacumn carefully blow all the nooks and crannys out, vacumn will get a lot of the loose junk flying.
5. Waste about 1/2 hour dinking around.
6. take off the flame sensor and clean it. make sure the HSI is free of dust if a hot surface ignition type furnace. Just use a LITTLE air pressure.
7, replace filter.

There, that took about an hour and you saved 80 bucks and spent 10 bucks replacing the filter.

IF the blower motor has a oiling port, oil it, if not, don't worry about it.

Beat chest and tell wife jane that tarzan need hot monkey love as he did man work. Drink beer when she laughs at you and watch football the rest of the day.

When it gets cold, turn gas and electric back on to appliance because wife is complaining.

If you sign with an oil company, they usually include a furnace servicing, which will also include cleaning out your boiler.  Price of the oil contract is usually $100.  Mine was at least.
