I didn't know Colt had a bushmaster model.  Damn you get the best of both worlds.  snake on one side pony on the other

I wouldn't have belived you unless I experienced it my self.  my favorite though was this guy I work with he told me he had put a full auto bushy on layaway for the end of the ban, well on the day the ban ended he picked it up and returned it the next day cause it was only firing 1 rd at a time and he thought it was broken

I know what you mean.

I told the counter guy at Big 5 I wanted to buy a "Machine gun" since the ban was lifted.

He said they did not have any YET.

But I could get one at the gun store down the street.

Quoted:
We sent a general email out to all the officers of local departments advising them that LE "restricted" AR15 rifles can now be purchased without a department letterhead.

It is somewhat amazing the misconceptions some LEO have regarding their "special" status.

I have had no shortage of guys who wished to purchase select fire weapons now that they are legal and most inquiries want to know how to obtain their very own HK MP5 or UMP. Many wanted that brand new HK G36 rifle.

Some want to know how far below my "dealer price" is the LEO price. One wondered about "volume pricing" on a single rifle purchase, he felt he should be eligible because other LE officers were sure to be buying rifles as well.

Had more than one request for the Colt "Bushmaster" model.

Many special requests for Colt rifles in .45 and .308, one guy asked me if I was getting the Colt .50s he saw on the internet.

One guy wanted to know if I could get the special version Colt makes for Navy SEALs which will fire underwater (I'm not making this up I swear).

One guy wanted the Colt rifle that fires AK47 and M16 bullets.

One guy after being told we only had complete rifles available, wanted to know if I could sell him the upper one day and the lower the next and if that would save him on the cost of a factory complete rifle.

Had one guy who asked me if I'd be willing to sell him a Colt LE rifle later when the prices got down to around $500 (he was sure they would  in the immediate future due to the sunset) and I told him I'd call him the day prices got that low.

Some were very hesitant to provide a copy of their ID to qualify for LE pricing because they were concerned their CLEO would find out, BUT they wanted to to make sure they got the LE discount.

And I swear I am gonna charge these guys $10 extra everytime they call a magazine a CLIP.

And the best one (at least to me) was the guy who informed me that he probably wouldn't need to do a background check for the purchase of his rifle because he did one last year when he bought a gun and it should still be good.

Thankfully "most" of the guys were better informed and pretty decent to work with. They almost make the other guys tolerable.

To be fair most cops are younger guys in their mid-20's who don't know a whole hell of alot about guns. There are idiots in every profession.

To be fair, most cops don't get taught how to shop for a gun at the po-po academy.  Think about the first time you walked into a gunshop.  I'm sure you wondered if that wicked looking black rifle fired like that movie you just saw.  But thankfully you probably ran into a gun dealer who didn't have an elitist attitude and who took pride in his profession to explain to you what you needed to do without being condescending.

Cops arent neccesarily gun people...gotta remember, we are a dying, rare breed. We know the ins and outs of the weapons we love as though our lives depend on it (because most of us fall asleep every night knowing they do)

Cops are supposed to know cop stuff...that doesnt mean by default they know every variant of firearm out there. Granted, it kinda sucks that they cant appropriately enforce the laws regarding "special" rifles...but lets all be honest...seriously...how often do serious gun people get into run ins with the police? I carry pretty much every day....I take my beloved black rifle all over the state (and this is a big state)...I always hike with it..and I have hiked the rockies for many years carrying openly in and around towns....and I have yet to have a cop ask me boo.

Im no cop...and after living most of my life in the PRNJ, Im not going to say they are all great guys because a lot of them were assholes...but IMHO...if you are cool with them, calmly educate them about the law regarding what we shoot....and maybe let them take a few shots...everything turns out ok at the end of the day.

YMMV

It will happen and the victim will win his civil suit against the officer and the department.

If it didn't happen in the last 10 years, it's not going to happen now. Turns out the only ones that gave a shit about the laws were us.

Not knowing about guns doesn't automatically make you an idiot, it makes you ignorant. I wouldn't expect a trooper to know how to rebuild the engine in his cruiser, either.

They already get basic firearms knowledge that they need to do their daily job while in their basic school. The kind of information you mention will be acquired by those who have an interest in the subject matter. None of you were knowledgible when you first started looking into ARs, I am sure!

Nonsense. They all need training far and beyond 'you press here and the bullet comes out this end', not to mention MARKSMANSHIP.
Your point fails utterly in that these officers are REQUIRED to enforce The Law. AND their daily duties can / may / will put them in contact with all manner of firearms - their ability to recognize, deal with, understand the technical aspects of the weapons they handle, AND THE LAWS THAT APPLY TO THEM is sorely lacking. and ABSOLUTELY should NOT be left to the random chance of 'individual interest'.

Your knee-jerk defense of LEOs reads as if you didn't even notice the list of IGNORANCE in the first post.

Marksmanship is already part of their basic firearms training. There are too many types of firearms out there for them to be intimately familiar with EVERY make and model of firearm. They learn the basic types: semi, wheelgun, single shot, long gun, etc. There are too many variations within those basic types for them to know EVERY firearm.
As for the law that applies to them, we have a lot of laws that we enforce daily. There are too many laws to know every law absolutely; thats why we carry reference material and develop a knowledge of who is a subject matter expert in a  given area that we can turn to for information.

My defense is far from "knee jerk"; it is based on reality and a knowledge of how things really work, instead of how they "oughtta work" on soemones mind.

Yes, and something as huge as the expiration of the AWB they should be briefed on, as LEO's are on most new laws they are likely to have to enforce.

On the other hand, I now have in my hot little hands eight brand new LEO/MIL/EXPORT stamped mags from DPMS.  Date stamped 2-04.  I intend to use these for range mags--at the Sheriff's range.  No, I am not a LEO, I just get to use the range.

In the last 10 years the ONLY time I have drawn an attention at the range was by the range officer who was drooling to shoot one of my AR's, and the next time I saw him, he told me he had bought one just like it... huge smile on his face... and thanked me for letting him shoot mine.  Oh, one other time, I was with my shooting buddy, a deputy from another department, he was firing FA (with his department owned G36).  An officer wandered over to see who we were, very cool, hung back, just concerned.  When he saw the huge DARE logo plastered on the side of my friend's unit, he turned around and went back to the pistol range.  Doing his job.

But as far as AWB stuff, not one gave a damn in 10 years.  And most all I have talked to, not one would have arrested a citizen for an AWB violation alone.  They just didn't care, knew it was a BS law.

At least that is how it is where I live.  Your milage may vary.

I want a LEO marked lower.

Speaking of stupidity, I asked my LEO friends and aquaintences, "All these police chiefs warning of machine guns on the streets now that the AWB is over, are they really that misinformed, or stupid, that they think the AWB was about machine guns?"

The answer I got was, no, they know exactly what the AWB was all about, it is purely political, the "party line".  They are using their little bully pulpits to scare soccer moms.  Ignorance, or stupidity, I can almost understand and forgive.  Lying really pisses me off.

I don't always agree with tcsd but he is right today.

Steyr Aug, take from me as a LEO, some of the stupid comments you've recited don't even scratch the surface!
It seems that the young cops from the larger agencies are the worst.  Theres about 3,000  sworn on my department, and the young ones by and large seem to know nothing about guns.
I've explained the AWB to several, and the benefits of it sunsetting.  You can almost see their eyes glaze over until I get to the part where I mention that they no longer need department letterhead to buy mags for their personal weapons, and they're no longer going to be taken advantage of by the local "police supply stores."  Oh well, what can you say?
