i asked a fellow shooter at my club if he had a part for my gun.  i told him i would pay for it. So he says he would give me one for free.  He gave me the part and its a POS.  broken in a couple of places.  So what would you do in this situation?

Buy a new one and move on?

Ask him if he has a better one as the one he gave me was defective?

I'd just buy another one and move on. Not worth causing a stink over and you're not really out anything since you were going to buy the part anyway.

Buy new, move on.
Tell him if he asks.

You didn't pay for the part. So what are you out?
Is it worth the possible strain on the friendship?

Pee on him to establish dominance

I thrown more free shit away than I can remember .  Keep it to your self .  That's what file 13 is for.

Can't tell you the number of times I've told people when the ask about something they have given , " Oh it's packed away ".  Since I move frequently .   Actually I make trips to the dump to get rid of the stuff.

This x2. He tried to do you a favor, it didn't work out. No big deal.

Put it in the POS parts box and buy one. Memory is a fickle thing. He could have thought it was in better shape.

Give it back, tell him it didn't work out. Thank him. That way you won't be put on the hook down the road as ''owing'' him anything because he ''gave'' you something.

True friends you should be able to be completely honest with and no fear whatsoever of hurting their feelings... I guess this is why I have just a handful of friends, but those friends are guys I can count on 100% and vise versa.

I'd have told him right then and there the part was not what I'm looking for, tell him why and thank him for the offer.

Install the broken part, fire the gun, wait for the impending kaboom, then profit!!!

Bill him for damages from defective part
Link Posted: 9/2/2015 8:04:06 PM EDT
Thank him, chuck it and buy a new one.
Link Posted: 9/2/2015 8:07:11 PM EDT
Punch him in the face.

It's free for a reason, just buy the one you want.
Link Posted: 9/2/2015 8:08:03 PM EDT
I'd buy one, and give the old one back to him and just tell him it wouldn't work for you and why.

What answer do you want us to give you?

Are you looking for

"Insult him and demand he owe you a brand new one. If he doesnt, arock him!"?

Link Posted: 9/2/2015 8:10:51 PM EDT
Never had this problem. All of my friends know better. Though this does sound like the kind of thing my father would do.

If it is broken then just bin it and perhaps tell your friend to not give gifts of broken stuff. I heard a million times in my life, "don't look a gift horse in the mouth." But I think you should, if only because having an old, worn out horse is much more of a burden than some think it is.
Link Posted: 9/2/2015 8:17:13 PM EDT
Say thank you. Buy what you want. Ifbhe asks say it broke
Link Posted: 9/2/2015 9:47:48 PM EDT
if hes your friend you tell him it  a POS and kick him in the shin.
Link Posted: 9/2/2015 11:58:50 PM EDT
If he is a true friend, tell him it is defective! Maybe he doesn't know and you might be educating him, on said part. Offer to give it back if he says trash it, you're in the clear, if he takes it back you're still clear.
Order your part and have no worries!

put it on EE
Link Posted: 9/3/2015 12:08:19 AM EDT
sell it on gunbroker for 3x MSRP
Link Posted: 9/3/2015 12:12:31 AM EDT
buy a new one and put the broken one in the package and return in

Just kidding, don't do that lol
Link Posted: 9/3/2015 12:16:35 AM EDT
Quit the club and block his number ......or buy a new one and stop asking for free shit
Link Posted: 9/3/2015 12:19:25 AM EDT
I might tell him just so he'll know that he might have some substandard parts, but after buying a new one so that he wouldn't feel obligated to give me another. I'd probably say that I wouldn't mention it normally, but that its something he might want to know.
