The trolls have been out in full force lately, so it's time to help a good member move over to the dark side. I want to give a membership away, and here's how it goes:

Tell us what the item in the picture is, and you got yourself a shiny new 1yr. Team Membership. If any other Team delinquints would like to do the same-get after it with a pic(s).

I know how brutal you Team guys can be, so please don't screw it up. The lurkers don't need any help.

Question: What is this? Who/why was it used? I'll forward the answer to a Mod/Staff. and they can pick/judge the winner.

A Texas and Pacific Railroad stool of some sort? Perhaps, like the guy above said, set out by the conductor to help people aboard the train. I imagine they might also be used in the train, but I know nothing else about them.

In the absence of a mod, TaterSalad asked me to judge.

The correct answer as provided by TaterSalad is:

Acceptable answers:
A Courtesy step
A Ladies’ step
A Conductors’ step

Use: In the late 19th & early 20th century, it was considered very rude/inconsiderate for a train company to expect a lady/child passenger to have to lift their foot more than 12” to board a train. Every Conductor kept a “courtesy step” handy to insure this. This step was from the old T&P RR (now UP). My maternal grandfather (first a brakeman-later a Conductor) was given this piece by my paternal great-grandfather (started shoveling coal as a “fireman”, and later the Engineer on an old one lung engine).

Its a poured concrete porch used to display antique railroad stools and standard measuring instraments for photographs.
