In the biggest Italian newspaper, a serious one and not a gossip tabloid, is reported that in the immediate aftermath of 9-11 a French general was sent to Washington (the newspaper said also the name but I can't recall it...) on 9-16 2001 with a secret mission.

He offered military assistance to US in case they will invade Iraq: 15.000 men plus ships. Bush administration showed good will in accepting. Months later, Rumsfeld declaration about "Old Europe" (France and Germany) freezed the possibility to get this support.

According to you, what happened?

This is something that can put relationships between USA and France on another perspective... did any american media tell anything about it?

Saddam's bribes to Chirac were more than ours. Pure cash on the barrelhead situation.

The French have always been a practical people. (Sarcasm)

Doesn't match up with the facts, IMHO. France didn't just oppose the war, they went all around the world telling everyone that would listen to oppose the war. IIRC, they even threatened economic retaliation against nations that didn't oppose the war. No way they changed from full support to that kind of opposition because of some comment by Rumsfeld.

The only thing that explains France's frantic opposition to the war is that we would uncover the massive bribes that they were paid by the Saddam regime.

The French were telling the US under the table they were in on the invasion right up until a couple of months before the war they went as far as sending personal down to Central Command in Tampa for planning of the invasion.

Rumsfeld had nothing to do with the withholding of French support. If you remember the day at the UN Colin Powell was so angry after a Security Council meeting which the French announce they under no circumstances would support an invasion of Iraq… that was when the Administration found out the French were not in on the invasion and had been lying to them.

The French are now trying to cover the truth and their treachery.

My thoughts exactly. The "Old Europe" statement came after the French made it clear that they had been lying all along.

Why would we want 15,000 frogs in our way?

They can't fight, they could not fight the Germans. They had to get former Nazis (Foreign Legion) to go fight their battles in Vietnam and North Africa. You would think all those German occupiers breeding their women would have given the last few generations of French a little backbone. Hell, all those German genes apparently went to waste.

We don't need the French.

What we needed to win was what we got. No help from the French.

France DOESN'T HAVE THE ABILITY to deploy and sustain 15,000 troops.
And their EVERY public action and statement has been ANTI-American. It's NONSENSE to believe there was ever such an offer, or such an offer was in earnest.
France abandoned their NATO obligations in '68(?ish), they've failed at every international warfighting attempt in the last 100yrs (except mining a GreenPeace ship).

This 'issue' is nothing more than a bullshit apologia / attempt to blame america for blaming america. 'Blame the Victim' redux.

Did you all know Chirac negotiated the deal in the 70's to get Iraq a nuclear reactor?

Its true!

Over here, the impression (quite accurate, as far as we can tell) is that the French never had any interest in helping with any invasion... Certainly not back in 9/01, when it wasn't even on the table yet...

Remember, the actual Iraq war buildup started in 2002. Back in 9/01 we were getting ready to do Afghanhistan, and Saddam was on the back burner....

Now, an offer of French help for A-stan at that time might have been believable, but it's a bit early to be talking about the Iraq coalition when we weren't planning on invading Iraq just quite yet...

Point One: Hell, even the Mexicans beat the French.

Point Deux: A Frenchman showing up to help is the equivalent of two good workers going home.

The French are a bunch of fvcking two faced weasels…

Despite captured Roland missiles in Iraq clearly showing current NATO stock and batch numbers they still claim these missiles were delivered over 19 years ago! Yeah right, a missile that has been sitting in a shed for 19 years will be fully functioanl and able to bring down the A-10 lost over Baghdad!…

The French were supplying arms to Iraq right up to the start of OIF… and the French able to deploy 15,000 troops! Biggest laugh of the lot… only if the US or UK helped deployed them and then supported them logistically…!

France has effectively ZERO military expiditionary capability.

France has just enough military capability to bully African governments who don't sign their petro development contracts with Total Fina/ELF. And that's been the extent of their independent military actions the past 20 years.

I don't know about that A_Free_Man since I don't think genes were wasted. The Germans just packed it in their pooper and didn't post pics.

The French DID send people to Central Command in Tampa to plan THEIR part of the Iraq invasion, this fact is well established. Until 2 months before the invasion they WERE telling the Administration they were in.

They were lying and when the President, Sec. of State and Sec. of Defense found out they had been lied to they got very angry.

That is when the Old Europe remark ect… came.

Yes they were participating in the invasion planning. The French had a general IN TAMPA doing invasion planning.

The French were telling the Bush administration not to mind their public pronouncements when it came time for war they would be on board.

This was why there was so much anger in Washington, do you remember how angry Powell got… that was because the French had lied to him.

Maybe if the French fried troops made it to the front lines they would be a good example of how to fight to the bad guys. As soon as the first shot was fired, 15000 poeple throwing down their weapons and running would have been a moral builder for the bad guys. Till they had way too much confidance, then the Marines stomp a mudhole in their ass and its over.
