Former Astro Ken Caminiti dead Associated Press

NEW YORK -- Ken Caminiti, the 1996 National League MVP who admitted using steroids during his major league career, has died at age 41.

Caminiti died of a heart attack in the Bronx, said his agent-lawyer Rick Licht. The city medical examiner's office said an autopsy would be performed Monday, spokeswoman Ellen Borakove said.

He had a powerful stroke.  Damn shame the juice got to him at such a young age.

Yep, I had forgotten about his drug problem.

While the article said he used steroids, it also said he was a cocaine user. Steroids aren't without risks and side effects (an opinion from one who has used them), but I'll go with the coke use on this one. And who knows, with all his physical problems, he may have been a heavy Vioxx user too (an anti-inflammatory...I just switched off of mine), which has just been pulled for raising heart attack risk.

I guarantee you there are lawyers looking at his Vioxx use. Who you gonna sue if your client dies from too much blow?

Caminiti was a monster when he was with the Padres in 1996!
The price of his rookie card just went up.

One of my high school friends (football player) died from a combo of cocaine and steriods when he played for Fullerton JC.
He had a 4 year scholarship to USC in 1980 wrapped up.

The corners report said that his heart was one and a half times larger than a normal heart, and that he died of an aneurysm, like his heart exploded.

It was sad as this guy went through high school in the late 70's in SoCal without drinking, smoking or doing any drugs except for steroids.
It was after he graduated that he became a cocaine freak.

Hmmm...better living through chemistry.

Seriously...that is a shame.  Steroids and cocain...nasty combo.  Not surprising he checked out so early.

He had an arm like no one.  Too bad the drugs got him.  He had been going through a pobation violation case here in Houston.
