I know I will get A LOT of shit for this but, I still don't own any firearms. I just recently got a job, and I turned 18 last October. I am currently saving up a little money, and I was thinking of getting a Saiga in .223 as my first rifle. Maybe even getting an MSA AR15 mag adapter. Would this be a good SHTF rifle/beginner rifle?

An AR is a good "Beginner" rifle.

Mini-14 Good enough for the A-Team

I'd start with a 10/22 first, especially since money seems to be an issue.  A .22 will get you a gun and allow you plenty of ammo for very little investment.  As a SHTF weapon, the Ruger 10/22 is likely to be the most popular one out there.

I have been considering it but, I'm just not interested in an AR as much

Get yourself a decent AR-15.

+1 on 10/22 suggestion.

You will learn a LOT by using a 10/22 and you will not bankrupt yourself on ammo.

I'd recommend a 12 gauge shotgun first. You can find an 870 express for under $300 dollars right now if you look around. You can use it for plinking, home defense, clay and hunting if you're interested. Lots of cheap ammo to experiment with.

After that, I'd recommend buying a stripped lower AR receiver, a decent one can be had for under $100 and a Del-Ton rifle kit. It's affordable, a reliable shooter out of the box and you'll have gained intimate knowledge of the AR by building it yourself.

Wait a tick....

You're on AR15.com, but aren't interested in ARs. What, prey tell, brought you here?

I do agree with the 10/22 crowd. I loved mine growing up. Great memories of me and Pop out back plinking cans while he taught me about the finer things in life.

Another +1 for me. Bought one "for my son" 2 years ago. I shoot it more than he does, but he has school and my work schedule allows me to shoot during the mornings. Now have 2 in the safe. Great investment.

First Rifle.....10/22 Ruger....no substitute....

Well OP, I won't give you any crap about not having a gun with only 308 posts; IIRC, someone on here has about 9000 posts and doesn't own an AR-15!
I agree with the others, a Ruger 10/22 would be a good first rifle...

You do realize this is Arfcom?

First guns I bought last year when I turned 18 was an AR15 and a Glock 22 since I already had a 10/22.

I'd say those three guns (except a Glock 17 instead of 22) would be great for a "beginner".

Get a .22 Rimfire rifle first.  Bolt or Semi-auto, doesn't make much difference.

They'll teach you the basics.  Like cleaning the rifle once before you take it the the range, and then every other time you shoot it.  You'll learn how to shoot, too.  First without, then With scopes.

You may even buy a .22 handgun.

After a while, preferably at least a year, then go to Centerfire firearms.

Or just get an AR15 and a .22lr conversion, you can always dryfire to work on basic marksmanship techniques.

Only thing you don't get while dryfiring is recoil.

This, then you can get a .22 conversion kit and have the best of both worlds. You can't do that with a Saiga. You can buy parts and build your AR-15 too, it's much cheaper and a good learning experience.

for your first I'd go the 22LR route, either a 10/22, Marlin 60, or Marlin 795

Nothing wrong with a saiga. You could save a bit more and get a good basic AR though.

My first rifle was a Mosin Nagant 91/30.

I will join the 10/22 chorus as there is no good reason to not own one. The same is true of the MN, so do yourself a favor and buy both as they are both cheap to buy and feed.

Buy an AR when you can afford to do it right.

If you can avoid being enticed by the cool factor, and base your decision on common sense - go with the 10/22.

It's a great rifle.  You will learn a lot from it without going broke.

My kids learned on one and I still own one after 40+ years of owning one.

Once you get a career going and have a few extra bucks - get an AR.

He doesn't like AR'S ? Commie pinko ?

Seriously ,a 10/22 is a great starting rifle for a beginner because it's cheaper to buy the gun plus cheap ammo and if you want you can customize it till your head spins off.  It will also make you a better shooter in the long run,you have to learn how to walk before you can run.

It was my first rifle I bought 25 years ago,and it's still going strong!

You asked SHTF?
Too many options depending on the shit!

?????????
live with the folks or on your own?

Ever played with guns?  EG: Did you grow up around them?

I'll start there

If ya want a off the cuff answer:  any .22 and a 12ga pump

Not everyone can afford a $1000 rifle for their very first firearm.  The most I could afford was a Russian double barrel, but it got my head in the game.  OP, Saiga's are very nice rifles, some of the best built AKs IMO, built in the original AK factory.  Convert it to a pistol grip configuration and you are in business.  I would, however chose one in 7.62x39mm.

+36 on the Ruger 10/22.  Wish someone wouldve been smart enough to step up and tell me the same thing when I first started.
