Just saw it at 7:05 am. A news reporter was filming people running into and out of stores. The news crew went inside and found police officers (black women in full uniform) with shopping carts full of merchandise going up and down the aisles.

The officers kept turning away from the cameras to hide their faces.

I'm having a hard time wrapping my mind around this. Maybe I shouldn't.

I saw this last night. Makes me wonder if I was getting the crap beat out of me if they'd even bother helping.

I saw that last night. They were trying to act non-chalante when the cameras came around.
Link Posted: 8/31/2005 3:36:32 AM EDT
Unfucking believable. Maybe she was just doing her "emergency circumstances duty" and was commandeering and safeguarding those goods so that people that really need them will be able to get them.
Link Posted: 8/31/2005 3:37:01 AM EDT
They were taking tampons for the greater good. To plug the levees.

Try Googling "New Orleans Police corruption", I bet you get 100,000 hits minimum. They are famous for it.

No surprises here.

1200 yards today. Damn.

Like I said, maybe I shouldn't be shocked.

N.O. PD has had SERIOUS corruption issues in the past.

The whole department isn't populated by crooks, but between corruption problems, PC hiring practices and the like, the fact that people who are thieves themselves are issued badges and firearms (but you non-criminal ordinary citizens better not carry while there, or they will squeeze your nuts, bubba) shouldn't suprise us.

I agree- sorry if there was any confusion.........I was referencing all the New Orleans PD apologists who were posting yesterday here on ARFCOM (hence the thread lock comment). I realize the NO PD has one of the worst track records in the country.

I hope that trash gets ID'd on the tapes.

Not only that, but, how incredibly FUCKING stupid and how big a piece of human shit are you that you will steal during a situation in which you swore to protect the very people you are stealing from??

No excuses. Kill them on the spot.

IBTCA, too. Honestly, you expect more from the police than the public at large. Well, with cameras rolling, sure. However, the temptation to indulge in the "Free Lunch" mentaility that pervades in this country has not, in my observed experience, not included the police.

The thin line between 1st world USA society and thrid world shithole has been crossed in NO. What are people going to to with the stuff they steal? If it gets water logged it'll probably be ruined. I don't think that this cop should be taking a freaking computer and other items but what are the police going to do? Shoot everyone coming out of a store with items and no reciept?

I will never advocate stealing (which is what looting is) but it just shows me that in a SHTF scenario how the public would react. Be prepared, and be scared.

edited to fix typo.

Many years back, New Orleans police force was considered the most corrupt in the nation. Probably right ahead of Los Angeles.

What would happen if the store owner was shooting looters and the police showed up to loot? What do you do?

If you shoot one because they are looting, you are now a cop killer. If you shoot an armed FEMALE, BLACK cop, then you are a violent sexist and racist.

I feel so bad right now.........

That's what they get for hiring black women as police officers. At least we know guys won't have to make tampon runs!

If it was in fact looting and not emergency supplies they were told to get ( I dont know, havent seen the footage) then I hope they are summarily fired and prosecuted. They're on tape, I damned sure expect the agency to act on the information.

Btw, I wear a badge too. I'm just a lowly jail guard nowadays but have been a patrolman in the past. I would never stand for this crap and I hope the honest cops in N.O. wont stand for it either.
Link Posted: 8/31/2005 5:02:25 AM EDT
Looters, is looters, is looters.

After the thread about officer taking supplies, and some of the stupid comments................. I can see that both ways.

But a looter, is a looter......................................

New Orleans was always kind of a Third World city even when times were good. Must have been the French influence.
Link Posted: 8/31/2005 5:14:40 AM EDT

I can believe it.

My last Mardi Gras trip, the cops were nuts.

Two of them walked up behind one of the guys we were traveling with, in the bathroom of a bar.

Patted him down, for no other reason than he was peeing in the urinal.

Took a keychain pocketknife, ripped his keyring apart.

Took $85 cash

Told him to be on his way or they would arrest him for peeing in the street

WTF, we were in the bathroom with about 4-5 other people.

Someone we didn't know said 'Why are you taking his money?'

Cop looked him in the eye and asked if he wanted to go to jail.

My fiance was waiting for us outside and we told her what happened. She, being a drunk criminal justice major, was pissed. Wanted to go file a complaint.

The guys just wanted to get back to drinking and looking at boobs.

anyway, very surreal visit to the bathroom
Link Posted: 8/31/2005 5:21:53 AM EDT
The NOPD needs to have all police powers taken now. Let the guard and other agencies handle it. Someone was wondering if it was them getting supplies. No or they would not have refused comment. If you have nothing to hide, then why hide? Then again, part of me says if it's your buisness then let them loot and let your insurance take care of it. Your home is different some badge or not, looters get capped.

I saw a great vid on fox of a large cop just tossing looters around. It was great. They would walk out of the store with shit in their hands, and he would grab them, throw them to the ground and tell them to get the heck out of there. It was a great site, someone needs to buy that man a beer, and give him a shiny new billy club.

We know. It's just appauling to see that happen when the person doing it is wearing a badge. The shit of society floats to the surface when the chips are down. The officers scum involved in this are just doing what comes natural to the people they always were inside.

Outraged firefighters demanded on Tuesday that the National Book Critics Circle withdraw the nomination of a book that accuses fire department members of disrespecting human remains and looting ground zero after the Sept. 11 terrorist attack.

"It should be up for a fantasy award," former fire Chief Daniel Nigro said of "American Ground: Unbuilding the World Trade Center," which is one of five finalists for the book critics award in the general nonfiction category.

The book, by William Langewiesche, has infuriated New York firefighters and others because it includes a passage relating the discovery of dozens of new jeans from the Gap _ still tagged, folded and stacked _ inside the cab of a fire truck pulled from the World Trade Center rubble.

"It's inconceivable that this man is going to be up for an award for the book he wrote," said Paul Miller, a firefighter with Ladder Co. 48 in the Bronx. "This guy put out blatant lies. He held it up as the truth, and now he's up for an award."

More than 100 protesters rallied outside the New School _ where the critics will announce the winners on Wednesday _ holding signs reading "Lies, Lies, Lies" and "It's fiction, not facts" and chanting, "We want the truth!"

Sarah Gold, an editor for Publishers Weekly and member of the NBCC board, said the awards committee had heard the protesters' complaints but would not withdraw the book.

Langewiesche, a longtime correspondent with The Atlantic Monthly, was granted full access to the cleanup site, where he conducted extensive interviews over several months. He has defended the accuracy of the book.

But Langewiesche failed to fact check, spread rumors and did not speak to authorities at the scene to verify his claims that firefighters looted valuables, said Rhonda Shearer, director of the WTC Living History Project and organizer of Tuesday's protest.

One office building near ground zero was "systematically rifled for valuables," Langewiesche wrote. "Whether by errant firemen, policemen or construction workers hardly mattered. All three groups were at various times implicated in a widespread pattern of looting that started even before the towers fell, and was to peak around Christmas with the brazen theft of office computers."

Shearer cited a letter from Deutche Bank, where the alleged looting took place, which said that the bank had no record of being contacted by Langewiesche and that it "never stated that there were occurrences of looting by 'firemen and policemen' as described in the book."

"If they nominated this book, they really challenge the credibility of the award itself," Shearer said. "This is not balanced reporting. This is not fair reporting."

"American Ground" also raises the issue of whether bodies recovered at the site were treated differently based on whether they were firefighters or not.

Fire Department of New York Chaplain Christopher Kennan, who worked at ground zero, disputed those allegations. All remains found at ground zero, he said, were prayed over, placed on stretchers, draped in American flags and escorted out of the ruins with an honor guard.

The book is published by North Point Press, a division of Farrar, Straus and Giroux. The publisher has defended the book and said it was vigorously fact-checked.

"We have found nothing to date to challenge the integrity of `American Ground,"' it said.

Of course they are outraged.

There was a clip last night of a Cop sporting Old_Painless's favorite, a pump shotgun. The Looters wanted no part of it, seems that the large opening called a muzzle makes a profound statement as we can attest to from OP's Box of Truth tests.

If you're lucky, as you're getting beaten your assailant will knock some of your teeth onto the ground, at which point the cop will surely intervene and write your attacker a $288 ticket for Littering.

Interestingly, the other footage I saw had two black female officers looting, as well. Why are we only seeing black officers looting? Is there any proof of officers of any other color looting? Or are they simply choosing to NOT break the law?

HA hA HA! That would have been nuts!

When I was at Mardi Gras my two police interactions were:

1) A hot woman up on a balcony above bourbon street whooped the crowd into a frenzy and then removed her top. The whole street went nuts. The cop behind me was standing in the doorway of a bar and shaking his head with a look of smug disgust on his face. Just then, BAM, the door to the bar flies open and is followed by a very drunk guy doing a superman impression (he was thrown out). Superman collided with the cop and they both went down all tangled up.

2) The other time I met this girl was talking to her she stopped to piss on a quiet street and the cops came and got her. She was too drunk to comprehend what I was saying when I told her to pull up her pants and get out of there so they put her in cuffs on the spot. The cops told me and my buddy to wait there; they'd be back in a minute. (Suuuure we will wait right here.) We beat feet out of there.
