The original thread was archived, so I wanted to create a new one to provide you with an update.

As some of you may remember, I was laid off from my aerospace management job in mid-December. Well, on this coming Monday, I start a new job.

This new job pays a little more than my old one, is about a half mile closer to home and, best of all, I get to be an engineer again instead of a manager! I go from 14 direct reports down to only being responsible for myself. This is the first time in over 25 years that I'm back to just engineering. I'm really looking forward to having less stress.

The only real drawback is that I'm going to end up traveling to their manufacturing facility in China a couple of times a year, but that's not uncommon for an engineer these days. One of the guys that used to work for me is also interviewing with my new company, so if he gets that spot, I could end up having somebody I already know to travel with, which would be pretty cool. No guarantee on that though.

I just wanted to thank all of you that offered your prayers and support for me either in the original thread or via IM. It was tough at first, mainly because of baggage that I was carrying from a previous layoff more than a decade before, but things are working out. I'll miss some of the people at my old job and a lot of the cool programs and products that I was involved with, but overall it's a positive.

Thanks again to you all!!!

Keep your ear to the ground at your new gig and give them a heads up?

Anyway, congrats and best wishes.

Awesome man! I'd love for the opportunity to travel to China, but I can see it being a downside as well

Congrats!

Its funny how some things work... I had the same thing happen to me about 5 years ago, was pushed out by a company I would have stayed with for a very time. Ended up finding a new position for more money, better benefits and better mental health just a couple months later.

Life works in mysterious ways

Maybe I'm reading too much into the avatar change, but is the new job in the automotive industry?

Congrats!

Good guess, but no. The Mustang is for my car, nothing to do with my job.

The products I'll be working with are for x-ray equipment, so I'll be dealing with FDA requirements. I've been wanting to get out of space stuff and into that for a while, so it's a great opportunity for me.

I'll be working with their people who are already based there, so that's a plus.

I'm sure that once I do it a time or two it'll become somewhat routine. My previous trips were all domestic though because of the nature of my work, so there will just be some adjusting.

Nice.  Now you'll be able to look back on the last 6 weeks as a needed vacation.

I actually had 8 weeks of vacation time built up when I was let go, so I'll be "double dipping" for a little while.

My wife has already informed me that she wants me to take my vacation time with this job instead of working all the time like I did at the last one.

Worst mistake any engineer will ever make (I did too) "Why yes, I would like to have that management position!"

Ain't that the truth!

When I worked at Underwriters Laboratories, you could go either Engineering track and dead end or Management track and make more money. So, I went management and even got talked into getting my MBA by my manager.

When I was in aerospace and I would go to hire engineers I was finding that the regular rank and file folks were making more than me and didn't have anywhere near the responsibility. So, when I got laid off, I concentrated on finding an engineering job. I'm hoping that I can get my BP to drop back to normal again without the medication.

UPDATE:

So.... I got a call tonight from the guy who had been my backup in my old department.

He was really miserable there after I was let go. He was pissed off at how they had treated me and pissed off that they dumped a bunch of additional work on him because my replacement is essentially incompetent. I knew he wanted out badly, and there was an opening in my new department at my new company. He had applied, but hadn't heard anything back for a while and had pretty much given up. Then he got a call for a phone screen. He said it went OK but not great. Then my new boss contacted me (this was a few days before I started) and asked what I could tell him about my former coworker. I gave him a glowing recommendation and then earlier this week he was brought in for a face-to-face interview.

Today he got a job offer from them and accepted immediately. Next week he tells my former employer that he's leaving them. They're gonna go through the roof when they figure out that he's going where I went!

This is going to leave them without anyone on staff who knows how to perform certain functions. He told me that they've already had a number of major problems since I was let go, and it's about to get much worse for them. Especially since he's not the only one in the department that's looking. I expect him to just be the next domino to go. Thankfully they had already lost their manned spaceflight contract (for a capsule life support component), so they won't be putting any astronauts' lives at risk.

I'm trying not to get into Schadenfreude mode, but damn it's tough!!!

I just hope the other good people that are still there read the writing on the wall and can get out on their own terms.

One of the other guys who got let go the same day as me said that by being some of the first to go the company had unintentionally "put us on the best available lifeboat."

Of course, I've also heard two other people use a "burning building" analogy.
