I hope this title doesn't sound too dramatic, but I wanted some thougtful input from the ARCOM brain trust.

So our country doesn't have enough flu shots....

Recommendation used to be: kids under 2 and seniors (and hi-risk groups) should for sure get them. Now with the shortage, kids over 1 probably will not get shots. Conversely, many seniors will not get shots also.

I saw on the news, all the old folks lining up at a clinic and all I could think was, "How selfish, you've live a long life, why not make sure we have enough for the kids?"

So what's the deal? Who decides how this goes.? I mean obviously there is some calculus going on to the effect of, "we are going to have xxx amount of casulaties here if we do y."

Thoughts? Discussion?

Since when were senior citizens not selfish?

Social Security insolvent? Who gives a shit, gimme my money! Medicare costs going through the roof? Who gives a shit, gimme my meds, I don't care who pays for them (as long as it isn't me, I have my home in Florida to think about)!

Welcome to the future.

Gone are the days of June Cleaver and 'everythings gonna be allright'.

Don't get all wrapped up in your shorts. You don't need the freekin' flu shot. Yeah, a few folks of shetchy health my get pushed over the edge and croak from it, but it's going to be a very small number.

For any scoiety that was truly concerned about its future, instead of perks for the largest voting block, this would be a non-issue. Aside from having vulnerable immune systems, kids have the highest probability of returning something valuable to society if they remain healthy into adulthood. In addition, kids are unable to buy their own vaccine, any properly prepared senior should be responsible for their own medical care.

You've had your chance, old people. Move along.
Link Posted: 10/18/2004 7:06:16 AM EST
MMcCall: The problem is that the children don't vote. The old people do. The govt is starting to take over the distribution of the flu vaccine on fears of some profiteering be reported/distorted by news media. So whose is going to get the vaccine?
Link Posted: 10/18/2004 7:07:37 AM EST
Whiiiiiiinnnnnnneeeee if I have the least discomfort. It's a non-issue which has been blown out of proportion for political purposes. The crooked Democrats (yeah, redundant I know) want to scare the old people into voting for them. Proof? Blaming Bush for the shortage of vaccine. As if he had any control over the manufacturing process. The company screwed up, and the British government, rightly, pulled their license. But, the Dems keep hollering. So, there will be "free transportation" to the polls so the voting block will have its influence. All humbug.

Who gives a fuck.

Influenza has been around for how long?

It's a different strain every year, and the vaccine is only good for the strains they THINK are going to proliferate.

Flu shots are worthless.

That is quite correct.

Never had a flu shot here either.

Maybe we'll get a flu pandemic that wipes out a huge chunk of the non-working old folks. Then we can dump social security too.

Link Posted: 10/18/2004 7:33:32 AM EST
How did I ever survive childhood without a flu shot? I have a friend at work who got a flu shot last year, and then immediately had the worst case of flu in his life. I'll pass.

Nice.

Problem: Government run health care
No competition in health care market
Government price controls = no profit incentive
Vaccine makers stop/limit manufacture due to lack of profit
Shortage of vaccine
Possible increase in disease and death in those at risk
Poetic justice, in a warped kind of way

The quesiton is how many of these old farts never got a shot but because there is a shortage they want it. The problem has been totally media driven.
Link Posted: 10/18/2004 7:50:09 AM EST
My kid isn't going to get one and didn't get one last year either, and I'm not too worried.

If the newspaper ran this article:

OFFICIALS SET TWO-BAG LIMIT ON LEAVES

Officials with the Department of Leaves and Trash said today that an unanticipated shortage of raked leaves mandates the imposition of a two-bag per household limit on leaves retrieved from the County landfill. "In good times, the leaves are there for the taking. People can haul them off by the truckload if they like. But these aren't good times, and we can't allow anyone to take more than two bags from the dump until further notice," said department spokesman Josh Golman.

the chattering mindless drones who populate much of our country would line up at the dump at 4 AM and fight over the leaves.
Link Posted: 10/18/2004 8:07:38 AM EST
If I were one of those conspiracy theorists, I'd say that the shortage is a good way to weed out some of the old, unproductive folk. Since I'm not, I'd say give the shots to the kids.
Link Posted: 10/18/2004 8:18:35 AM EST
flu shots. let me be the first to call .

People in this country have been pussified by medication over the years. stop taking so many damn drugs and maybe you will just naturally stay healthy.

Should kids or seniors die?

Seniors.

A good strong Flu epidemic this year just might resolve our Social Security and Prescription Drug issues as well!
Link Posted: 10/18/2004 8:35:36 AM EST
Selfish Seniors is only going to get worse as the "greatest generation" dies off and generation that came of age in the 60s and 70s ages ... those were the people that RUINED our country through their worldliness, their selfishness, their MISGUIDED SOCIALIST HIPPIE CRAP

Mark my words, it's going to be much worse.

See... now I've gone talking that smack here before, and get shot down in flames because nobody older than 50 wants to accept the truth.

I don't see why. Actually, this may be the first time I have ever agreed with you.

The retirement of the baby boomer generation could be the single greatest financial catastrophe for this nation since the great depression. These people are going to have more medical problems, requiring more medical treatment and more prescription drugs. They are also going to have a higher standard of living, which when coupled with natural inflation is eventually going to require an increase in Social Security spending.

The baby boomers will strip social security the way that ants strip a carcas!
Link Posted: 10/18/2004 9:23:03 AM EST
IMO the flu vaccine is a luxery item.

I honestly dont see what the big deal is.

Myself and my whole family for the most part have always gone without the flu vaccine.
Link Posted: 10/18/2004 9:23:39 AM EST
If you want to blame anyone for social security and its cost, blame the parents of the greatest generation for the gift they gave to their kids. The reality is the generation of the 60's and 70's will have paid far more into the system then the greatest generation and received far less.
Link Posted: 10/18/2004 9:31:38 AM EST
As far as I know, I'm getting my flu shot here at work and I don't feel the least bit guilty about it.
I'm 53 and I don't fall into any high risk catagory (I'm one of the folks who is supposed to forego vaccination so everyone else can have it). Interestingly, my age group is also NOT recommended for the nasal spray vaccine. Now, historically, age 50 and above was always concidered a high risk group but now we don't fit into any vaccination priority catagory.
I do think it's bizzare and very PC that some are supposed to go without so we can insure that the feeble and unproductive won't be at risk of not living indefinately into their dotage.
To Hell with it all.

Well, no disrespect, but let me be the first to call on your call.

In less than 100 years we have more than doubled human life expectancy, and all but about 5 of those years (more or less, depending on which source you cite) are directly attributable to improvements in basic Public Health - which includes improved hygiene, immunizations, nutrition, and other forms of preventative medicine.

Don't forget that those "naturally healthy" people back in the good old days "without all those drugs" lived to a ripe, old average age of 30 ...
Link Posted: 10/18/2004 9:40:09 AM EST
Any flu epidemic that's going to cause a significant increase in fatalities is going to have an effect on a lot more than just seniors and children. Think the Spanish Flu of WWI.

Remember the Alamo, and God Bless Texas...

Oh about a year ago I went on a massive tirade about SSA and Baby Boomers.

I just got my SSA statement on Saturday in the mail. They now say in the actual statement that as projected, by 2042 there will only be sufficient funding to cover 70% of the stated benefits listed in my statement.

Wait a second. That's my goddamned money. That's my motherfucking money that you come and hijack out of my paycheck. You do it 'for my own benefit', even creating an 'account' for me that accrues a balance.

Then you tell me that you can't cover the costs of my withdrawl?

In banking, that would be considered fraud and a criminal act.
