In the past, it was said that it was better to leave flourescent lights on, instead of turning them off to conserve energy, as they used so much electricity in start-up that it actually averaged less energy to just leave them on. Is this still true?

If you plan on leaving the room for more than about 15 seconds, you might as well turn them off. Mythbusters did a really good episode on this and disproved the myth for every bulb.

The main advantage of leaving them on is related to life expectancy, not start-up energy consumption - they don't last as many hours if you're constantly turning them on and off...and yes, this is still true with "modern" fluorescents.

Off-topic, but has mythbusters ever done a show on the "take-down" sniper rifles that Hollywood loves so much? Screwing in the barrel, snapping on the scope, and still having a perfect zero...
