Yesterday on my way home from drill weekend I stopped at the Flight 93 Memorial.  I think it's something that everybody should see.  Literally in the middle of nowhere.  For those that are in the military this is a reminder and for those that aren't this is the confirmation for why we do what we do.  For those that know people that like to bash the military or the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan please show them the pictures, because this is what complacency causes.  On 9/10 we were asleep, on 9/11 we were woken up.  I much rather bring the violence and destruction to some shithole county that have them bring it here.

Anyways, here are the pictures

I have stopped at Shanksville several times, and I am always touched by how personal & heartfelt some of the items & messages left are. It seems a lot more "real" than some artists monument.

I worked on both UAL planes that were used.  a couple co-workers helped at the scene.
thanks for sharing.

Outstanding Americans.

They sent the enemy a message.

God bless their families.

I went to a family get-together in Windber this weekend and on our way back, we stopped at the Flight 93 memorial, which was about 25 miles away. Like the OP said, it's pretty much in the middle of nowhere. But even as simple as the temporary memorial is, it really makes an emotional impact on you.

Just wanted to add some more pictures that I took:

I think I would break down in tears if I went there.

I hunt deer on that site..  The place is fields(old strip mines) surrounded by timbered out woods that is overgrown.  I hunted that place before it was mined out.  I hunted it when they were mining, I hunt it still.  Too bad .gov is buying it to turn to a national park/memorial and all hunting will come to a halt.  I wish they would erect a small memorial and be done with it.  But instead they want a 2700 acre extravaganza..   They have a guard there now that stops you while spotting deer at night.  The old draglines are fenced in and it used to be fun to climb the catwalk up the booms.  The weekends bring all kinds of out of towners and they look at you funny when you drive past with a truck full of hunters in the bed with rifles.  It helped drive up the cost of real estate in the area.  Lambertsville rd is a mess on summer weekends.  Did I mention the city trash it brings in?  A sad event indeed but the commercialization is even sadder.

Labor Day weekend 2001, I was riding the 4wheeler right along the treeline just beyond the impact site and all over the place with my cousin.  Nobody gave a fuck.  Now they will ticket you for it..

the actual impact site is a hundred yards or so square.  Like I said, no problem with a small memorial but 2700 acres?  And truthfully, I dont care what they do with my dead bones.  Ride a fucking dumptruck full of catshit over me for all I care.  .To each his own.  I dont see how turning the place into a tourist spot does anything but degrade the place.

I'm not sure this is the right thread for your bitching about your deer hunting, or your fucking land price. Maybe start another thread?

I agree BUT, emotions run high on this one and somehow your hunting plans don't fit in. Places I've loved have been taken away from me by development / urban sprawl so I know how you feel.

I'm with Valkyrie on this one.  A small, dignified memorial funded by private donations would be perfect.  A government-funded 2700-acre sprawl smacks of vote-buying and/or contractor pork.

i went to the makeshift memorial outside of the pentagon up on the hill next to arlington national cemetery... and... seeing that was the most horrifying, most disturbing thing ive ever seen.  it was so sureal.  it was hard.

with the anniversary comming up the local car clubs are trying to get as many people as possible together for the annual ride for pride that will take place on sept 8th.  any american muscle/sports cars are welcome.

Whatever..

The locals are all pissed.  So much the PA Game Commission is trying to purchase some adjacent property to offset the hunting arcrage that will be lost..  Thats how much an issue this is..
