Well, I never served but I would like to think of myself as a patriotic fellow. I love this country and would like a flag draped over my casket when the time comes.

But, is this practice only reserved for military or elected/appointed officials?

Not that I am going to care what people think of me if I have a flag over my casket, but I'm just curious if doing this is "not" considered patriotic in one way or another. Kind of like disrespectful of those who have served in one capacity or another...

Anyone ever attend a funeral where the casket was draped with a US flag and the deceased never served in the military or as a government official?

Your thoughts...

I think it's only reserved for military, maybe police.

I think state dept. (foreign service) members killed overseas get theirs draped too.

I have never heard of it. I'm in the AF and have been to SW Asia and Afganistan but I would not be offended. I would say that 21 gun salute would be a little much. By the way cops that die in line of duty get the flag and there not in the military. And Iam not taking anything from police officers that die in the line of duty. I hold law enforcement personall in the highest regards. But they are not in the millitary. I do think its a crock of shit that congress and senat get flags and honors durning their funerals. 99% of them didnt serve the country, just themselves.

I thnk high ranking officials get a 19 gun salute? I remember seeing the ceromony where they brought home the caskets of those killed in a plane crash in Bosnia. They did the 21 for military and 19 for civilian.

Were you a good American? Did you hold to the values of the country, obey its laws (Well, maybe we can ignore some of those driving speed related ones), and otherwise were a credit to the nation?

If 'yes', then I don't really see an issue.

Heck, if you want to have some of your AR15 buddies fire off three volleys, I don't have much of an issue with that either. (Unlike the gesture of coming peacefully in respect such as a 21-gun-salute, the three volleys goes back to Roman times, and the three pieces of dirt as people say 'goodbye, goodbye, goodbye').

I think the Queen gets a 41 gun salute, if I recall correctly.

You can do whatever the heck you like. This is America. Could somebody get offended by it? Sure. Should you care? Absolutely not.

Writing your will, you can have done anything you wish at your funeral. Anyone who knows you well enough to attend your funeral will probably know why you chose to use a flag on your casket, IMO.

If anyone objects, tell them to chase you down & say so.
