Police: Man shot dead at park after threatening fisherman
PINE BLUFF, Ark. Police say a Pine Bluff man was fatally shot in the head after he threatened to kill a man who had been fishing at a Army Corps of Engineers park.
Twenty-four-year-old Derrick Redd died yesterday. Police say he was arguing with people at Saint Marie's Park, when he went to his car, grabbed a gun and fired it into the air. Police say he then headed toward 58-year-old James Woody of Pine Bluff, who was unloading his boat.
Woody saw Redd approaching, reached into his truck, grabbed a gun and got behind the truck for protection. Police say Redd chased Woody around the truck and threatened to kill him when Woody turned and shot Redd in the head.
Family members told investigators that Redd was being treated for mental illness and had stopped taking his medication. Redd was a trainee in the state Children and Family Services Division.
Prosecutor Stevan Dalrymple says he will review the case but doesn't expect to file any charges.
