I just applied that fix, I'll report back after a day or two of use.

I know how long it normally takes for me to overwhelm the memory on my system. (it used to take days of having firefox up and running when I was on a dial up connection, now via cable I can have it dragging in mere hours of use).

Seems to work but will give it a day or so.

So far 8 browser windows open and all have 5+ tabs open. 3 have 8+ tabs of videos all playing. 258,800k seems to hold around there

Ah man, I am gonna give it a try anyway.

I got it as high as 270,000 and it still clmbs real slow, but if I minimize all the pages, it refreshes it.

I did some hunting around and it seems like its not a great fiz unless you uninstall the Flash plugin. I have not tried that yet.

two tabs open sucking down 174K worth of RAM, and that's after applying the "tweak" that you are referring to a day ago.

Or just use IE and surf less porn sites.

No workie here either.

My work machine only has 512M of memory
and bogs down horribly with or without this
fix.

Dude, that's 174MEG of RAM (174,000K).

For how much Firefox "is totally teh awesome!!!11!" it's hillarious how many people post "fixes" for stupid things, like making web pages show up and not sucking all your RAM.

IE sucks for just about every site. I tried it again last week and remembered why I gave up on it.

Well most of us have over a gig of Ram so its a non issue. For folks with less Ram, I would suggest buying more memory before going back to IE.

ETA, the "fix" didnt really do much for me either.

Anyone try uninstalling the flash plug in, Allegedly that works.

I am going to try the 1.5 beta to see what happens.

ETA again 1.5 dont seem to get it squared away. Actually with the "fix" you could minimize all the windows and it would free up them mem and start its trek back up. But at least you could clear the mem. With 1.5 you cant.

It is not to big a problem on my desktops that have 1GB and more ram but I have a laptop that is max out at 384MB ram and the Firefox memory leak is killing me.

So I think I have found a solution… Opera.

I had played around with Opera on and off for years… I downloaded the latest version of Opera for free a couple of weeks ago and just kinda of played with it until Thursday.

Now that I have been using it on that laptop for the last couple of days and have come to the conclusion Opera is now simply put a better browser than Firefox.

Opera is faster, has tabs, bocks pops-ups and spyware at least as well as Firefox, easy to use, and is not dragging my laptop to it knees.

I think I am going to dump Firefox completely.

The free download they had a couple of weeks ago was for their anniversary, they did it for only 1 day, it is the full version and it has no adware of any kind.

The free version they normally off does have ad support.

I downloaded Opera again (like 1 hour ago) and used the registration code given that day of the promo. It took it.

OPERA is friggen UGLY. Works but I just cannot get used to it. Man what an eyesore. It must be made for folks who like Macs.

Are there any decent themes or skins that you can recommend?

Yes...

Go into the Tools menu select Appearance > Skin tab and switch to the Windows native skin or click the Find more skins radio button and download one you like.
