Well, I just learned today that my cousin died last night from an accidental discharge.

I don't have all of the details yet, but I have most.

It appears that his girlfriend just bought him a new handgun. He had some friends over, the handgun was loaded, and he gave it to one of his friends to check out, apparently with the warning to be careful, that it was loaded.

A moment later, the gun was fired, and my cousin was dead.

So, for me at least, proper gun handling and firearms safety has hit home.

I know, for example, that I never hand a loaded firearm to people, for reasons exactly like this.

My cousin's father is an avid hunter and gun enthusiast. I'm pretty sure that he had been over safety multiple times with his oldest son, but not having talked to that part of the family for the last 8-10 years, I don't know what exactly has gone on.

I just wanted to take a moment to nag you all about this issue, and responsible gun handling, and make sure that you hammer the point home with everyone you know, especially your children and loved ones.

Sorry to hear that, and the lesson is taken to heart.

Very sorry for your loss.

Every gun is loaded. Rule 1.
