After spending 4 months watching The Sopranos, I decided to watch a few mob movies. Goodfellas was first on the list.

I have to say I was disappointed. IMO a pretty boring and badly acted film.

Don't understand all the love for Scorsese.

My 3 favorite mob movies are:

1. Donnie Brasco
2. Casino
3. Goodfellas

Italians in movies don't impress me.

I have to say out of all the mob movies, Goodfellas was one of my favorites!

I really liked Goodfellas and Casino, I guess you have different tastes than me, who would have guessed.

Good movie, until Liotta became a gov turncoat.

It's a well crafted film. The tracking shot in the night club is stupendous.

He's right, those Italian low life motherfuckers don't deserve any screen time.

That may be, but for whatever reason, these movies have attracted some of the best actors of our time. The Godfather and Godfather II were phenomenal, and Goodfellas, Casino, and many more are movies I'll watch over and over. I have to admit that even as a high school kid, I read everything I could find about cops, the mob, and the military, and still find all these topics fascinating to some degree.

Seriously?

That is nearly universally loved by my friends, co-workers, shit men generally, including by me. You may need to re-watch it, or risk a man card violation.

Not a day goes by that I do not hear someone say one quote from that movie - usually "Today! Not tomorrow, not next week, today!"

I liked the movie but I don't really like Ray Liotta (sp?).

Read the book "Wiseguy." It's far more entertaining, if only because they go into a lot more detail about all the scams they pull.
Link Posted: 10/11/2007 4:49:45 AM EST
Wow on hating the Godfather and Goodfellas. I don't place too much stock in things like the Top 100 movies list, but I believe both of these movies are on the list (I know Godfather is, I can't remember about Goodfellas). I have yet to really meet anyone that doesn't like those movies.

Henry still gets on every now and then.

Train wreck... check!
Scum-bag low-life....check!

But, his story gave us Goodfellas.

I still cannot get over someone openly admitting they don't like The Godfather. I could BARELY understand not liking Goodfellas, but The Godfather?

Inconceivable!

One of the best movies, Ray Liotta is such a bastard, I hate the end too.

Love A Bronx Tale, Donnie Brassco, Casino, Scarface, etc......

It was revenge for Billy Batts and a lot of other things. There was nothing we could do about it. Batts was a made man and Tommy wasn't, we had to sit still and take it, it's among Italians it was real greaseball shit. Even shot Tommy in the face so his mother wouldn't give him an open coffin for the funeral.

Not really.

Goodfellas was good in the same measure as Cop Rock was bad.

Read the Book (don't see the movie) Donnie Brasco if you want to learn about being in a mob family.

As for other poster not liking the Godfather films: +1 on the 'turn in your man card' comment.

Goodfellas has a huge number of fantastic moments - but I will go out on a limb here and say that I thought the total package was not as good as the sum of its parts. Maybe there is, or will be a re-cut edition that is better. But there are some truly wonderful scenes. My personal favorite is the look of realization on Joe Pesci's face when he walks in the room to get whacked. There are few examples in acting that emote so much, in so brief a moment.

I didn't enjoy it that much either. I think it's a Yankee thing.
Link Posted: 10/11/2007 6:01:46 AM EST
I've seen plenty of mob movies, and I think "Goodfellas" is one that hardly glorifies the lifestyle; the central character ends up having no one he can really trust, on either side of the law.

Lighten up Francis

Saying you think Goodfellas sucks in GD is a bit like joining AR15.com so that you can post about how the black rifle is a POS. You're gonna get some shit.

Goodfellas was good. Not great, but good. I liked it as much as The Untouchables, even if that one had Kevin Costner in it.

The Godfather was great, and so was Once Upon A Time In America.

If you are talking really bad mob movies try Scarface. It sucked until "say hello to my little friend" and then went on sucking after that...

Hmm...

"Propane and propane accessories" sounds a lot like "cocaine and cocaine accessories." Coincidence? I think not...

The movie Goodfells was from a book by "Nicholas Pileggi" called Wiseguy

As far as I can remember, it is a faithful rendition. It is called Goodfellas because of the other one or two movies called Wiseguys, and of course the TV show, so they decided to rename it.

the movie was great.

Shit, I love that film.

If you don't like Goodfellas or The Godfather, there's a very simple reason:

YOU SUCK AT DECIDING WHAT MOVIES ARE GOOD.

And that's fine. As long as you don't tell me what to watch, I don't care.

Untouchables was lame. Typical movie to make the hero look to be like some kind of patron Saint with morals above all of us.

Another of my all time favorites is Shawshank. I like movies that portray the "bad guys" as the good guys. And the so called good guys are actually the bad guys. Politicians and cops are just as crooked as Vito Corleone. Only difference is they use the courts and legal force to force their will.

Vito was actually a good guy. Loving father and husband and he took care of the people that took care of him.

How could you not love a guy who can put a head of a horse in someone's bed?

Unlimited money and pussy?

It's been a long time since I've seen The Godfather, but I'm always temped by the boxed set.

I love Goodfellas. I watch it over and over. I've never seen Casino or Donnie Brasco though. Maybe I'll have to go looking for them.

+1 on Johnny Dangerously

I also get a kick out of Analyze This.
