Since there isn't a dedicated thread yet(!)....

Release date is November 29th.  I'm super excited for this game - especially after the major letdown that was FF13.

"Enroute to wed his fiancée Luna on a road trip with his best friends, Prince Noctis is advised by news reports that his homeland has been invaded and taken over under the false pretense of a peace treaty – and that he, his loved one and his father King Regis, have been slain at the hands of the enemy.

To gather the strength needed to uncover the truth and reclaim his homeland, Noctis and his loyal companions must overcome a series of challenges in a spectacular open world - that is filled with larger-than-life creatures, amazing wonders, diverse cultures and treacherous foes."

If you don't want to watch all that, here's a 10 minute summary:

If you don't want to watch that, here's Conan O'Brien playing with Elijah Wood:

After a decade plus in the making, I sure hope it's good. I just wish they would start releasing them in PC at launch, instead of giving us crappy ports a few years later.  Still,I'm glad I kept my PS4 for this one.

Yeah, since it's not a PS exclusive, there's really no reason not to have a PC version at launch.

from the gameplay video it looks like they've gotten rid of the turn-based battle system.

the clueless gamer segment was funny though.

...i think the fractured but whole will get my video game money in the near term...  ffxv can wait for a steam summer sale  =)

I'm looking forward to it... but...

You didn't like FF13? I admit that 13-2 wasn't great, but I enjoyed the first one and lightning returns...

honestly ff12 was such an unplayable steaming pile i just kind of gave up.  just looked 13 up on steam though... for $16 i can't see any harm in trying it.

I played the demo, and like the battle system.  Also, not having a transition between the world and battles is a nice departure from traditional JPRGs.

I didn't mind FF12 too much (the Ivalice tie-ins helped; FF Tactics and Vagrant Story are two of my all-time favorites), though I didn't like the main character.

I thought 13 was a mess.  I never got in to the story, didn't like the battle system, and after playing ~22 hours, I quit.  Apparently, I never finished the "tutorial" portion of the game.

I played the demo too. It's a huge change for the series but it was a really fun system that still had some depth. I've been a huge fan since VII so I'll be picking this up for sure.

I forgot to mention, the FF7 Remake battle system looks similar.  The big difference is that it appears you can switch to/control the other characters in your party.

Played 1-10 ( beat 1-7 ), about an hour of 12, and the failure of a game, Dirge. As SE went farther and farther away from what the original was like, the more and more I hated the series. The change in graphics look great, but the change in game play, not so much.

I'd at least redbox it, it is a change obviously but I don't think it's a bad one based off my demo experience.

Have not played a FF game after 12 ( and I hated 12 ). Not planning to try any of the new ones. I prefer the turned based game play of the older games and not hack and slash active combat of the newer games. It's what I grew up on.

I still own a PS2  just for the turn based games. FF, Lunar 1 and 2, chrono-trigger, Xenosaga, etc...

I understand the sentiment completely, but agree with PancakeOfDoom.

The old days are gone, and Square won't be making any main FF titles with turn-based combat anymore.  I guess it comes down to what you play these kind of games for.  For me, it's always about the story first.  Obviously the gameplay is important, too, but I've played a lot of subpar RPGs because they had good stories.  Everything so far points to FF15 being an all-around great game with a deep combat system.

Have you tried the demo?  You might not mind the new combat system, and "real-time" or "action RPG" doesn't necessarily mean "hack and slash".

Stitches, the old FF games are on iphone/android too, don't know if you saw that. Also, I got a Nintendo 3ds specifically because there are so many FF style games from the Japanese market since they're still very popular over there, might be worth looking into.

Meaning must be different for you and me then. Hack and slash= beating stuff up with melee weapons.  "the term "hack and slash" began being used to refer to early weapon-based beat 'em up action games"  /shrug

Scroll to 12:20

EDIT: I'm familiar with FF and similar style games for cellphones, but my vision is not good and prefer to not make it worse by squinting at a small screen for hours on end. It's why I have a 55" tv and a 27" monitor.

Won't be for everyone. I know hack and slash is broad, but I'd put it more in the realm of diablo hack and slash and not like gauntlet or dynasty warrior. It's simple but there is depth to it. I'm hoping at release they have some of the old ones on sale, I wouldn't mind replaying VII again.

I'd love to play VII add VI again, but since I sold my ps3 ( lots of rgps on my PSN account ) and those games are not compatible with the PS4 just yet, if ever, I'll just have to play the games that I do have.

FF7 Remake is coming for PS4 someday - Amazon currently has Dec 29, 2017 for the release date.  Though the remake is going to use a similar battle system to FFXV.

I'd love to see remakes of the Square classics (Chrono Trigger, FF IV, V, VI, Tactics, etc.) where the only thing they do is update the graphics.

I would love to see a remake of Final Fantasy VIII with new graphics and voice actors, while retaining the original combat system.

Pretty sure at least VII is on steam, can't check since I'm at work. Should run on basically anything too.

The last FF I played from end to end was FF VIII, and I really enjoyed that one, despite its issues.

That said, I hope this one is good.  It looks pretty cool at least.

If you ever get an itch for a more traditional FF game with "modern" graphics, FF X was very good (although they did away with the "world map" in X, IIRC).  I enjoyed it more than VIII.

I generally hate preordering games but I have yet to be disappointed in spending money on any FF game. I've liked some much more than others but I've always at least got my money's worth. Anyways, for the 5 of you that still don't know somehow, don't forgot you get 20% off by preordering through amazon

edit: 20% is only for prime members

If it's any consolation I'm sure SE will have a half assed port next year that will never go on sale for more than 10% off. I like the FF series but they sure do love to never put anything on sale and screw PC gamers whenever they can.

Wait mode looks to be usable only on one character and not your whole team. Don't need a team mate running off and doing their own thing.

In the old days, I would have skipped school and called in sick to work.  Alas, I now have real responsibilities and can't do that anymore.

I'm off tonight so I've been playing

My characters are level 9 right now. Going pretty much blind into this game, I'm very impressed with it. I haven't tried the "wait" combat mode yet but I'm enjoying the active mode; reminds me of Witcher 3.

The wait mode is my favorite. It isn't as fluid but it brings more classic final fantasy to the table as far as planning your actions out.

Extremely impressed so far. Sure, there are some things I wish were better, but I was nervous it wouldn't feel like final fantasy, absolutely delivering there. The only thing I'm already not looking forward to is when it's over, also I'm mentally preparing for a FF VII Aerith moment.

I played 2.5 hrs today.  Love it so far.  I haven't tried the wait mode yet.

One of my favorite things is listening to the old FF game soundtracks while driving around; it's a nice touch.

It's weird. I care more about this cast of characters than most other games. If an ally falls I do everything I can to help them up.

The animations in this are amazing. The link attacks are fantastic.

Combat is kind of a mystery to me. I'm not sure how it works entirely. I get the block and dodge mechanics but the general weapon swinging seems random. Some of the time I can get these really cool aerial combos and then switch to the spear for a big dragoon esque stab.

The pictures are great. It is really nice seeing the characters. The general world movements the other characters do is great. They'll drop stuff, Prompto will take pictures, etc.

The dungeons are fucking cool. The way the characters move in them is great and is very immersive.

My only complaint is the music... I don't know if I've heard a single song from this game? I can't recall what the combat music is like. I'm not playing with high volume, though.

I'm hooked. Love it.

Holding circle (if ps4) which is your attack will continuously attack, and depending which direction you point on the thumbstick will perform different combos. Then you can string combos together. If you do these combos next to an ally you can perform the link strikes. The combos and link then can all change based on which weapon you have.

Wait mode... this should be on by default! Makes combat so much easier!

That's what the instructions say, yes.

I can do the exact same stick inputs every time and come up with different combos. It just doesn't seem to be consistent.

I know that with the two handed swords I can get a build up attack by holding back but that's the only thing that's consistent.
