Teacher put on leave after YouTube video surfaces

The Higley Unified School District can't seem to stay out of the headlines.

Less than a week after the district shut down a touring theater production for apparently being lewd and crude, a short video surfaced Friday on You Tube that has resulted in a teacher at Williams Field High School being put on paid administrative leave.

Citing the need for confidentiality in personnel matters, the district would not confirm the suspension of Christina Mallon, the cheerleading coach, who is seen in the video performing a seemingly innocuous cheer at the front of a classroom as students hoot and cheer. Higley schools are on fall break this week, and efforts to reach Mallon were unsuccessful.
 




The You Tube video, which runs for less than a minute, made it all the way to NBC's Today show Tuesday. A possible explanation for Mallon's stunt is that the new school was focused last week on activities related to "Up and Coming," its version of homecoming at other high schools.

In any event, it has been an interesting 2007 for the district, which serves southeast Gilbert and has been dealing lately with more than the usual growth-related issues. It has had those, too, and homeowners in the district have seen their property-tax bills skyrocket.

A long-running feud between Superintendent Joyce Lutrey and governing board member Kim Anderson has been the backdrop to most board meetings, with Lutrey confronting Anderson during a meeting Aug. 29. A heated contingent of parents turned out for a meeting last month after a three-day failure of the cooling system at Chaparral K-8, a new school bursting at the seams.

Then there have been the censorship stories, first in May with a Higley High senior, Anthony Sciubba, a devout Christian who insisted that God had been edited out of his yearbook profile. The district apologized to Sciubba.

The most recent flap came when a New York theater troupe, presenting a Shakespearean parody Oct. 1 to an audience of 700 sixth- through 12th-graders, was stopped in midshow by Tara Kissane, the district's arts director. Kissane objected to language and gestures used by the troupe that she deemed inappropriate.

The theater company, Windwood Theatricals, still hasn't been compensated by the district, which is considering nonpayment on the basis that it did not receive the show for which it had contracted.

Well I didnt manage really. It was more of a oopsy...

I sat second row, second to far left of the class. Hot teacher was walking in front of class telling stories about college. She started in on a story about some wierd dude that was in one of her classes. She told about how everyday before class he would sit in some cubby hole in a wall or window or something.  She happened to be standing in front of me when she demonstrated how the dude sat. So it was like feet flat on the floor, legs partly spread, knees into chest.(pretty much like rice paddy prone) She was wearing a dress and panty hose.
I think only me and the girl next to me saw it.
I was young and let out a
Teacher realized what had happened and went and sat at her desk. Quite awkward, but fucking awesome too!

As for school administration being dumb... We have a 6 million dollar football stadium but due to the budget we can't have out test printed due to paper budget... So I have to write the fucking questions....

What she did was very unprofessional.  How did she think she was going to be able to manage her class after dancing like that in front of her students?

What is acceptable in one part of the school is not acceptable in all parts.

She was obviously showing off.  An adult should not want to dance in front of her students in order to get attention and kudos.

I feel sorry for her.  Maybe she will grow up and be a good teacher in a few years.  Right now, she is more interested in being cool and in tight with the students than being a professional educator.

And yes, I am a teacher and damn sure old enough the difference between appropriate behavior and inappropriate actions.

While it's kinda lame that she can't let go of her glory days (they're over, bitch) that routine was completely harmless.  I have seen some raunchy ass cheerleading routines.

I agree but I'd still not take formal action against her over that.  It's a bit inappropriate, however there is NO context to the video so I have no idea what lead to it.  Could be an attention whore, could be that they were supposed to 'raise school spirit' and she did what she knows.

When the state of Florida banned the use of exposed mercury in high school labs for public schools, my teacher (in private school) broke out a bunch and put it on the table.  He said if we were immature enough to put it in our mouths or not wash our hands if we touched it, we deserved to die.  He was a retired Navy captain and instructor at Anapolis.  The man took no crap and did whatever he wanted.  Why?  He didn't care if he got fired.  Regularly cussed us out and told us how stupid we were.  My favorite teacher by far.

Never danced in class though (except to mock some people).

As a veteran cheerleader Dad, I saw nothing out of the ordinary.  

My Daughter was in High School and private ompetion cheer for years. This was a typical cheerleading routine.
