For those of us using AR .22's you know what Federal has done with the Bulk .22.
It's very inconsistant and unreliable. Several duds are being sent out.
I have written Federal 3 times in the past two years.
It wasn't always that way. I used to recommend Fed Bulk. Now it has become a joke across several boards.
I stated to Federal that I will suggest a boycott on Federal .22 Bulk Pack. Maybe if it doesn't sell, they will take a look.
No real reason to buy it anyhow. It's crap.

Shot over 5k of it through my 10/22 this year, with probably fewer than 20 failures to fire.  For accuracy, it shoots as nice as CCI Mini Mags for me, shooting it out of my gun, meaning I can hit about 5 moa.

I've been buying 2-4 boxes of it every time I go to Wal-Mart in anticipation of the price going up.  Have 19 boxes in the ammo closet.

I work at a place that allows me to keep up on the upcomin price increases on ammo, plus i get a disacount on  it. about 3 yrs ago, i found out the fed 550 rnd value pack were gonna sky rocket. I went and bought right at 200,000 rnds of it, it was like $8 per 550 rnd box plus my discount, brought it to like $7.20 box.

I use this ammo exclusivly in the M16 as i never get a dud, havent bought any .22 in 3 yrs so unless the new fed 550 value packs are less quality controlled then they used to be, they are without a doubt the best i have used in F/A guns, seem consistant and reliable.

If the new stuff sucks then someone needs to let them know and quit buying it, maybe the OP just got a bad lot??

I can't really say.    I'm still using stuff that is a few years old that I bought for <$10 a box.

Funny you say that, the last 500ct box I picked up was JUNK
(winchester western)
In aprox 150 or 200 rounds I got at least 10% ftf and 20% just didnt fire.
I had someone at the range, tell me to toss them and he handed me a box of something else to make sure it wasnt a gun issue. (the 10/22 was new out of the box.) zero issues with the other ammo and zero since.

Dave,
Not sure who you have been talking to but around here, the federal 550 packs are some of the best .22 deals around.
None of the problems you report.

Seems like the rest of ARF also has positive experiences with it.
Maybe it's your weapon(s)?

I and most I've talked with have at least 20% failure. Underpowered, inacurate. Every time I use it I hear bang, bang, pop, po, bang.
One day someone will have squibs from this and then there will be a problem.
The old bulk pack worked great. We used it to test and rcommended it highly. Spikes even developed thier .22 conversions and dedicateds around the Federal round.
But in the last 2 years, it went to crap.

Federal? Seriously? I've been using it for years, never had a single problem.  Now the Federal "Match" in the white box –– that's crap.

Glad I bought 2 cases a few years ago. It was $2 cheaper a box also./

That is what I need to find out. Who is having issues and who isn't.
Several of us including manufacturers that were using it to test have had the same inconsistency and accuracy issues.
I realize this isn't target ammo. But when I first started using it, it was consistent and accurate for what it was.
Now I get, bang bang, pop, pop, bang and 4" groups at 25 yards.
And it changed during the Obama scare.

That is another reason I know it's different. I too bought several thousand rounds when I started shooting .22 rifles. I had a lot of the old and continued buying the new. After I ran through the old stuff, I started using the newer bulk packs. The packaging even change. That is precisely when it changed.
I thought I just got a bad box but sevaral boxes latter, it's still the same.

I've run several thousand through my rifle within the past few months and besides a few FTF, it's been pretty consistent.

Had no problems with the 550 pack or the Auto match either. I have never really checked accuracy on my ar w/ .22 conversion tho... I just figured with a drop in .22 conversion it wouldnt be super accurate. my BAR-22 and 10/22 and Browning Semi-Auto Takedown love the stuff.

I had several rounds out of the 40 I shot that were subsonic. The powder loads were very inconsistent.

Winchester bulk packs are $1 more at walmart and are 100% for me.

Winchester ( issue with magazine not being seated within the first 1-2 rounds)

+1 - the only thing that consistently runs my Spikes; relatively accurate also.

Wish I could buy more but still only sporadically find it at W-M.

For me Remington is terrible.

It's cheap ammo that works fine.  I run it all the time in my Spike's .22.  It's not very accurate.  It comes from Wally World.   If you want accurate .22 ammo, then you're going to have to break down and pay the money for accurate .22 ammo.

ETA: Ditto, in my experience Remington .22 ammo has always been substandard.

Sometimes the entire brick runs great.  Sometimes 3-5 out of 50 won't pop.  Remington is somewhat better.

I haven't had accuracy issues with either, but I am usually not a paper puncher.

could very well be that half are having great luck with it and half are having defective rounds.

Federal and CCI are the same company now.  There have been threads on this over at rimfire central  dot com.  Sometimes you're getting federal federal and sometimes your getting federal made by CCI,  and the reverse, sometimes you get CCI CCI and sometimes you're getting federal in CCI packaging.

From what I recall, the CCI  made stuff is the good stuff and the true federal stuff has the current junk lots.  Lots of posts on rimfire central with pictures of bullets, lube appearance, and packaging materials to figure out what you really have.

I think the definitive thing was a difference in the layout of the lot numbers.  One had a mix of letters in the lot number and the other didn't.

IIRC the majority of the discussion was about the cci standard velocity.  The federal made in CCI boxes was trash.

I have about 12 boxes that I have stockpiled during the past years. It fte in my ruger mkIII (this gun will eat anything except these federals) every two mags or so, but cycles fine in my gsg-5. I now buy the remington golden pack it works fine in all my guns.

Fed bulks pack have been crap for the last couple of years for me. lots of duds and underpowered ammo. Started when the great ammo rush hit. I think the need to push out as much as they could affected QC.  That said,I have not  bought any fed 22 for 6 month,so many its improved.

I noticed that problem when shooting suppressed. Every few rounds you wouldn't hear the round zipping down range (sub sonic) others you would hear the crack......it went bang an that's all I cared about.

You get what you pay for.  I just went through 2 bulk packs in my Buckmark and had maybe 10 that didn't fire.  All were shot again and went off the second time.    I think $31 for 1,100 rounds is a pretty good value for me.  If I want more accuracy or reliability, I switch to a more expensive ammo.

ETA...Federal is my favorite bulk 22lr ammo.

Go to Mega-Lo and buy the Federal Automatch. It doesn't cost that much more & is seriously better ammo. Probably not near "match" standards, just good reliable ammo that feeds like a shitting goose in all my semi-auto .22's, rifles & handguns. I have yet to find a gun it will not run in reliably. I have an old Stoeger Luger that before I found this stuff the only thing that would work well in it was CCI MiniMags, which are the shining star of .22 ammo, but have gotten pretty expensive since Obongo went into office.

I use the federal bulk .22 almost exclusively in a 22A pistol, marlin M60 and in my ceiner adaptor for the AR, no problems for me so far.
