I usually buy Remington Golden Sabers or Federal Hydra-Shoks, but for no particular reason. I normally carry .38 +Ps in a snubnose and my wife carries a Sig P232 .380.
How about you guys? |
Gold dots.
After that, corbons, rangers, hydrashocks, whatever works. |
That is some seriously good shooting ammo that many people know nothing about. [The FMJ part I don't agree with tho] I have 1K of that along with a K of reg MFS and it is as accurate as most expensive target ammo. Freeky. Clean as heck also. Fed +P JHP. |
180gr Gold dots I have about 250 rds of those followed by another 500 of golden sabers.
Holy crap, lots of Gold Dot fans here. I don't think I've ever seen them.

any particular reason why? |

Georgia Arms 230 gr. +p gold dots
$15.00 for 50 rounds in a plastic bag. |
I read some good things about them and bought some 5 years ago and got a good deal. I tried them with a varity of targets to see the results, they will do the job as well if not better than others I tried. I think the ones available now are probably just as good. |

The old Black Talons are an obsolete design. It's not even close to Winchester's current best (The Ranger-T). The over-the-counter Winchester SXT rounds aren't so impressive.
Yep. They perform better than Rangers in all the tests. |
Gold Dots, Federal Tactical and Ranger Ts are all much better. |
Glad to see that most people are moving away from Hydrashoks.
why are they bad? |
They are not bad, just overrated. |

600 rounds of 9mm gold dots, about about 300 rounds of winchester white box personal protection (cheapest PD ammo I've seen). $11/box of 50 at Wally World. I am waiting to test it though.
They're about the same price as Gold Dots here.. I'm curious, too. I have some of both, and I think the Hydrashoks look like better ammo. I dunno. |
The Hydrashoks have been outdated for some time now. Gold Dots are superior to the Hydrashoks and any of the "LE Only" ammo is a tad better than Gold Dots. Win. Rangers, Federal HST, etc. are tops. |

.45 ->Hornady 200gr TAP or 230gr Rem Golden Sabre
.357 -> Winchester 110gr JHP .44 -> PMC 180gr JHP (44 Special) |

The best ammo to use is what ever you can hit your target with.
A hit between the eyes with the old FMJ/ball ammo will put them down a lot faster than a hit to the arm with the latest "modern new fangled super killer bullet". FWW. I carry following ammo in my pistols: 9mm - Federal 115gr JHP a.k.a. Federal 9BP 9mm+P - Remington 115 gr JHP 38 Special - Federal 125gr JHP Nyclad a.k.a Chief Special 38 Sepcial +P - Winchester 158gr lead SWHP +P 45ACP - Federal 185gr JHP or Federal 230gr Hydrashok These ammos were chosen because they were all reliable in my pistols and accurate. They are all JHP design mostly to prevent over peneration of FMJ/ball ammo design. |
OK but why? |
They expand more reliably and remain intact better as well. |

Yup. The black talons were good in there day, but like someone else said are outdated now. |

180 Grain Ranger SXT in the weapon right now. Gold Dots and Federal Tactical in the safe as well.
147 grain gold dots in the HD gun
230 grain Ranger T in the carry gun. |
Glock 20 = 165gr Golden Sabers
Sig 220 = 230gr Federal HST Glock 30 = 230gr Federal HST S&W 3913 = 147gr Gold Dots Glock 17 = 124gr +P Gold Dots S&W 637 = 135gr +P Gold Dots S+W 586 = 145gr SilverTip S+W M19 = 145gr SilverTip Mossberg 590 = Winchester Ranger Reduced Recoil 00 Buck Armalite AR15A2 = Q3131A |
Don't have a choice in the matter. Gold Dots, 12 Gauge Federal buck and Remington 55gr .223 softpoint are issue, that that's all I can use.
Just so happens it's good ammo anyway. |
