“Yes, I think I'd be grossed out if I had to watch two characters with rolls and rolls of fat kissing each other ... because I'd be grossed out if I had to watch them doing anything,” she writes in her post. “To be brutally honest, even in real life, I find it aesthetically displeasing to watch a very, very fat person simply walk across a room — just like I'd find it distressing if I saw a very drunk person stumbling across a bar or a heroine[sic] addict slumping in a chair.” At the end of her post Kelly asks: “Fat people making out on TV — are you cool with it? Do you think I'm being an insensitive jerk?”

Well, if nearly 1,000 comments and hundreds of blog posts and tweets over the past three days are any judge, Kelly now knows the answer to her question — and then some.

“I am in shock...and my heart hurts because of this article,” writes one commenter. “Maybe next time a fat person crosses a room you're in, you'll really look at them and see that they are a human being just like you are and that their purpose of being is not to please your aesthetics.”

“This is the most offensive piece of writing I have read in an on-line magazine,” says another.

“You didn't realize your words were hurtful and this article could be seen as bullying when you wrote it? Do you really lack any sort of common sense?” writes a third.

On Twitter, offended readers are promising to cancel subscriptions under the hashtag #unfollowmarieclaire. The fast and furious response to Kelly’s piece has even led the Adages blog on the Advertising Age site to write about “Marie Claire’s Biggest Loser.”So harsh was the reaction to her piece that Kelly issued a response, apologizing for her insensitivity. [Attempts to reach Kelly for comment were unsuccessful.]

What blows me away is that these people, who KNOW they are fat, get all pissed off when someone is just simply honest. I see this a lot at the hospital I work at - "Why can't you do my Catscan/MRI/X-ray?" "Uhm, well maam/sir, you are too heavy or rotund to fit through the machine, or you are too heavy to lie on the table since the motor won't work, or you will break it." "Did you just call me FAT? ARGH!"

Seriously? You don't know you are fat? You get pissed off when people tell you this?

Yeah they even get pissed when the hospital sends them to the zoo to get weighed, because the hospital scales can't handle the weight.

I understand that they may be self-conscious, and God knows my poor wife has battled her weight all her life and that she's a wonderful person who is about the most intelligent person I've ever met (well, except for saying "Yes" when I asked her to marry me) and that I love her regardless of her weight, but hell . . . SHE even calls herself fat. She has shocked so many people when she describes herself that way, and then laughs and says, "I don't need my eyes checked - I know what I look like in a mirror." But these people who are like 600 pounds who get mortified or upset when you tell them that they can't sit in a chair because it will break due to their weight, or when I hear an ER doc tell the patient that the reason they have CHF and why they had a heart attack is because they are morbidly obese and that if they don't lose at least SOME weight they will DIE . . . . it just blows my mind.

Don't remind me - I had a patient FLIP OUT when we told him he'd have to go to Sea World to get an MRI done (back when they used to do it for us - they don't anymore). He started talking about how undignified it was, blah blah - Doctor told him fine - you can have a dignified death if you don't get this done and we can't figure out what is wrong with you.

Long ago while working with my dad's company, we did some remodeling at the home of a retired doctor who said he had his over-300lb patients stop at the local cotton gin for a weigh-in prior to their appointments (this would have been in the 1970's and possibly the late '60's).

At one hospital we had to initiate a "Lift Team" that consisted of specially trained, young, VERY muscular men who had special hoist equipment for these patients. It cut down on a LOT of injuries amongst the other staff - it was actually a great idea.

How does that factor into the discussion? The vast majority of obese people have no physical defect causing them to be overweight. I know, I am one of them.

After I got out of the Corps I went full fucking retard and packed on 60 pounds in short order. I have done some dieting since then but it always fails. It's cause I am lazy and would rather surf arfcom then work out. It sucks to work out and not eat yummy things It's my battle to fight and what motivates me is when my USMC buddy call me a fatass or make twinkie jokes.

Shame is a powerful tool

Calling out crack heads or meth heads has no relevance to the issue that most obese people face. Don't get all fucking militant when someone calls you on it.

The problem is they are NOT dying early. It used to be a morbidly obese person wouldn't make it past 50. Now I'm seeing 70-80 year olds that are over 350-400 pounds in the hospital. Not only are they old (with all the problems associated with moving them and caring for them) but they are huge as well.

The people on that show aren't husky, big boned, chunky, thick, etc.....those folks are morbidly obese.

1. The magazine that publishes this blog purports to be one in support of ALL women, no matter the size.
2. The author of the blog stated that she has dealt with anorexia and here she is giving food/weight advice.
3. The author stated something along the lines of "I'm no fatty hater...I have a plump friend and talked to an overweight maintenance man once."

People get really pissed when they pay to support something with one view and then said service jumps the shark. And perhaps someone with her own weight issues should think twice before she starts throwing stones at others. Glass houses and all that.

I remember one of my Mad comics in the eighties having a strip where they made fun of how Americans were starting to get overweight and how we would all be using scooters to get around. One of the frames had some (presumably Russian) looking soldier poking American's who wobbled but they didn't fall over (Weeble Wobble reference

). The media needs to quit portraying this as a healthy alternative lifestyle- there's little if anything healthy about it. Shame used to be a powerful tool to bring about change, now folks have no shame in their appearance or their attitudes. That's not to say we all need to be waif thin, but quite telling people it's healthy as long as they feel good about themselves. Our chassis is not designed to carry that kind of weight and it shows in the exponentially increasing number of orthopedic problems. Our circulatory system is not designed to keep that mass irrigated with fresh blood and it shows in increasing cardiac problems. Etc, etc.

For those who don't think it affects them you're wrong- it's one of the big (no pun intended) reasons health care costs are skyrocketing. It's also one of the reasons worker's comp costs are going through the roof; they make more medical claims and are more prone to on the job injuries than those who are physically fit.

Disclaimer- I need to lose some weight myself but I don't look anything like those pigs.

ETA- the only thing "stunning" about the first model in the first picture is that she doesn't bust out of her outfit. She's got a pretty face, but having rolls of fat is just not healthy. That last one is a cow.

People who are extremely fat are hard to respect... I'm fat, but I am not so massively obese that I cannot walk across a room without waddling or being out of air.

Me on Sunday.

I've tried pretty much every diet known to man, and I can't ever stay with it, so I'm going to try what my friend (who had the same problem) did and go see a nutritionist and get appetite suppressant pills, have a diet and exercise plan set up specifically for me and my weight loss goals, etc.. When I got shot last year I lost about 15 pounds from the Vicodin I was taking because they made my appetite go away, so I think that's probably the problem.

I are fat people and I hate seeing us. I don't want to watch it on TV or in real life. What the weight advantaged are mad about is that they hate to look at themselves more than their peers do. But it is easier to find a random person on the internet to get mad at than it is to stop eating so damn much.

Being fat puts a massive strain on internal organs and joints. I would almost equate it to the damage done by heavy meth users. It is just not so obvious to casual view.
