While not as severe my dad lost three fingers in a farming accident, told the help to finish up and that he was driving himself to the doctor.  He was up at 4am the next morning back milking cows.  He didn't want anyone else helping him because it was his mistake and he was going to deal with it.

You are right that this type of attitude is disappearing.  Of course it doesn't help much when the schools are teaching the children not to do anything and that the government will protect them.
