[b]Fare Thee Well Maryland[/b]


I am out of here.  My wife and I have given up on Maryland and are escaping to Pennsylvania, and we couldn’t be happier to leave.



We have lived in Columbia since 1990.  In the past 12 years, we’ve watched Maryland continue to degrade while its government simply helped it along.  Maryland has been #1 in burglary for 6 years. What has been the government’s response?  More gun laws for the law abiding.  Baltimore has been at the top of the list for murders.  The response - more laws for the law abiding.  We’ve seen open air drug markets in Columbia as Baltimore has exported its crime.  We’ve seen rapid growth, suffocating traffic; punitive tax rates and failing schools create fast food employees that barely speak English.  Where does it all end?



As executive professionals, my wife and I “donated” $16,000 in income and property tax this year.  I work for a West Coast company, requiring a 5% sales tax on all sales conducted in Maryland.  We sell several millions dollars of product here each year.   All these taxes will now be go to Pennsylvania.



I’ve tried to work within the system to improve things, but Annapolis doesn’t listen to the little people.  Maryland obviously doesn’t value my contribution, so I’m leaving.  This overbearing, nanny state doesn’t even trust its citizens to protect their own lives!  33 states in the Union trust their citizens to carry a weapon to protect themselves.  All these state enjoy lower crime rates, despite the fears of creating a “wild, Wild West’ atmosphere.  While Maryland likes to tout a recent drop in crime, a true analysis of the statistics will reveal that the surrounding states are experiencing faster drops in crime than Maryland (www.mcdl.org).  The difference?  They trust their citizens to arm themselves.  They honor the 2nd Amendment of the Constitution, a document Maryland likes to ignore.  If you don’t believe me, check out the latest infringements on our 1st, 4th, and 5th Amendment rights that passed in the latest “anti-terrorist” legislation.



I doubt this letter will get published, and if it does, I doubt it will taken seriously.  But let me warn you, I have 3 friends that are fleeing this state with their families (and taxes) right now, for the same reasons.  I could name a dozen others that have left in the last couple of years.  Decent, honest, taxpayers are moving farther out, or leaving the state altogether.  Everything this government seems to do just makes it worse.  More restrictions on the law abiding, more taxes, more welfare programs.  These policies don’t fare well for the future of Maryland.

Moved to VA last year (Thank GOD).

Congratulations on making it out alive!  My family and I departed the People's Republic of Maryland in 1995 and we never looked back.  I paid for the move just by my income tax savings for the first year.  Now I live in a place where my kids can play outside and get a decent education.  Good luck to you.

In PA it is illegal to load more than 3 rounds in your magazine at a public range. It is also illegal to hunt with any semiautomatic rifle, including your AR. PA is definately an improvement over Maryland, but it is no gun owners Mecca.

Thanks everyone.  The taste of Freedom is in the air in Pennsylvania.  I can't hardly believe the nightmare is almost over.  Only plus to Maryland is that it woke me up and encouraged me to become a gun owner and activist.

As far as the two points you make regarding PA gun laws, it's pretty sad if that's all it takes for you to call PA "No gun owner's mecca"

The hunting regulations are made by the PA Game Commision, NOT our elected government...

The only "Real" rifle worthy game here is whitetail deer...
I sure as hell wouldn't want to shoot one with a little .223...
My Remington .30-06 bolt gun dropped a trophy sized buck in his tracks last year with one shot...No friggin way an AR-15 would have done it...


Groundhogs are pretty much the only "game" you could shoot effectively with an AR...

Don't know how accurate your statement is regarding 3 round limit at public ranges...
Never heard of that before...

Private clubs and available open land FAR outnumbers public ranges...

Why even bother with a public range ???

My private club has no problem with me showing up with 6 AR's, 2 AK's, and 20 loaded 30-round mags...
Bumpfiring is frowned upon but not a big deal...


Not to start trouble, but PA is 1000% better than any state around it AND the state that is hosting the BRC...

Yeah, I know there are better states than PA, but not by much...

I'm one X-MD'er who can't believe how much of a sest (sp?) pool MD is becoming.

I'm hoping that since we have guns in VA and a river between us, that the 'rats will stay in MD.

P.S. This confirms other reports I've heard regarding the mass exodus of good people from MD.

Annapolis has been running MD into the ground for decades and complaints from overtaxed Montgomery County residents fall on deaf ears. I do fear I live too close to a cosmic black hole that will eventually suck up even VA.

I lived in Maryland for years until the election was stolen from Ellen Saubrey...then screw that godforsaken leftist bit of Massachusetts down south.

Moved to Virginia...lower taxes, cheaper homes, better schools and limited bleeding hearts (No Kennedy spawn here either!).

Gotta' admit, PA is too voluable when it comes to gun laws.  Class III used to be forbidden there, way too much population in eastern PA controlling the gun laws...kinda' scary.

Once again, congrats on getting out of that cesspool of a state!  Aren't you going to miss having a dwarf dyke for a senator though?

When was C3 ever prohibited in PA?  I've known guys who had stuff in PA well before '86.  One claims to have registered a good number of his collection back in '68 amnesty.  If C3 was ever prohibited in PA, its news to me.

And although the cities do exert some control in Harrisburg, there is a state firearms preemption prohibiting them from enacting their own local gun legislation.  Even CCW was changed a few years back from "may issue" to "shall issue", thus stripping LE in major cities from having ANY discretion in the process (In the cities, it used to be very difficult to get a CCW in the major cities even with the state preemption because of the discretion LE had to deny an applicant.   The liberals have gotten some junk through the legislature, but not much; PA is a pretty safe haven for gun owners.  

That's the retirement plan.

The Missus and I moved to Stafford, VA from LaLa Land seven years ago for many of the exact same reasons.  We briefly considered property in MD, since my parents once lived there...but quickly decided that MD has too many trappings of socialism and settled in the Commonwealth.
Your actions are symptomatic of a general flight by people of means and abilities (and their revenue), from socialism in many states, to less restrictive, freer venues.

Rumor has it that over 100,000 people per year are fleeing CA alone for other states.  One long term effect of this will be a more conservative strengthening of those states that traditionally vote for Republicans.  Thank God our Forefathers instituted the Electoral College!

Welcome to PA, the land of the free and home of the brave. I live in the north west part of York County (Dover that is). I am 15 mins from a public range that had one 50 shooter and 6 AR-15's the other weekend. I never heard any rules about mag limits. Then again, i am a member at West Shore Sportsmens Association which is a machine gun/assult rifle friendly club and in north west York County, 20minutes from my house. They are also the strongest handgun club around york. Great place to hang out and shoot. Drop me a line if you ever want to go.
