Man dies from accidental shooting in Mishawaka
MISHAWAKA — The cause of death of a man who mistakenly shot himself has been ruled accidental.

Gene W. Sult, 47, was drinking with friends about 9:15 p.m. Saturday in a home in the 100 block of Wayne Street when he began showing off his gun.

Sult handed the gun to a friend and when it was handed back to him, he said, “Don’t be afraid, it’s got a double safety,” according to police reports.

Sult then pointed the gun toward himself and began pulling the trigger. On about the fourth pull, the gun went off, striking him, the report said.

Sult was dead, sitting in a kitchen chair, when police arrived. His thumb was still on the trigger, the report said.

Reminds me of the Three Stooges.

WTF is a double safety? The closest thing I can think of is the mechanism on a Springfield 1898 rifle. One is the usual prevent-the-gun-from-firing safety, and the other prevents the gun from feeding a round into the chamber.

Shame, at age 47 he had probably already reproduced, passing those stupid genes on to another generation.  Darwin has to get them young, or it's pointless.

Grip safety and thumb safety on 1911?

Mebbe it was a lever action with the hammer safety and the crossbolt safety...but probably not, eh?

Apparently one of the safeties (the one between his ears) was defective.

Didn't think of a grip safety. Good point.

Well, Rule V isn't needed, since # I & II pretty much cover it.

To clarify, I have seen plenty of people shoot guns while enjoying a drink.  The key is moderation, as always.

an old friend of mine had a guy blow his brains out all over him doing almost exactly that in OK.

guy had been drinking, and decided to show him how his pistol wouldn't fire without a magazine in it. put the gun to his head and pulled the trigger to demonstrate.

I don't have much to add, since it's obvious that this guy violated every safety rule in the book (and maybe some I don't even know about).

Here's something though: Can we start a public education campaign directed at reporters in particular? Even after he PULLED THE TRIGGER 4 TIMES, the reporter still insisted on writing "the gun went off". I mean really, now.

Think about this, the next time you read a story about an "accidental" discharge.

About ten years ago, 60 Minutes had on the guy who sued Remington after he blew off half of his left foot with his Model 700.

As the guy was explaining what happened, the pointed the barrel of the rifle to his remaining stump to show where his foot ended.

And there you go.

That doesn't make is a smart thing to do.

Enjoying a hobby where you stand of good chance of hearing damage while breathing in all sorts of bad stuff and handling lead might not be the smart thing to do either, but sometimes you weigh the risk against the joy it brings and decide its worth it.
