The former wife and children of David Ranta have filed a $15 million lawsuit for the loss of his companionship during the two decades he spent locked up for a murder he did not commit .
The suit accuses retired NYPD homicide Detectives Louis Scarcella and Stephen Chmil of coaching witnesses to fabricate evidence against Ranta.
Ranta was freed last year. More than 50 cases involving Scarcella's work are currently under investigation by new Brooklyn District Attorney Ken Thompson.
The city, which paid Ranta a $6.4 million settlement earlier this year for his wrongful conviction in the 1990 killing of Rabbi Chaskel Werzberger, is also a defendant in the new suit.
