OK, this is just simply freaking cool as hell.

F-111 Low and Fast

How many knots you estimate those guys were pushing as they came overhead? BTW, listen closely as the first F-111 passes over the cameraman, you can clearly hear the glass breaking in the background.

Maverick, eat your heart out.

BTW, here's another low and fast pass from my second favorite combat aircraft of all time:

F-111 Gold Coast high speed pass

No wonder the Aussies love these things so much. I have to admit I miss them myself. The F-15E is cool, but I've never seen them get as low or as fast as the F-111. Those things are simply wicked fast. Too bad the crews in the first video apparently got into a bit of trouble with the higher ups for their stunt. But in doing so, they sure brightened the day of those observing on the ground. Haha.

I LOVE low/high speed passes like that .What a rush that must be!

I'd guess roughly 550 knots/635mph to 600 knots/690 mph due to lack of sonic boom or trans-sonic vapor cones.

Mach1 = 644.3 Knots or 741.1 mph or 1087.47 feet per second at standard temperature and pressure

Screw you Clinton for parking them. Bet they're still more survivable than the Mud Eagle.

Vapor cones are not indicative of transsonic conditions. They are strictly due to pressure and humidity differentials. They can appear below 250 knots
in some conditions and not appear at all at any speed in other conditions.

I'd say that first 111 was doing at least .8 mach given the acoustic profile. Not quite a boom, but not too far from it.

I live in BFE and nearly every day 2-3 F-16s come over tree top level just under mach1. They some times wave their wings at me. (they have to know me by now waving at them) It pisses the wife off but it sounds like freedom to me. BTW they are loaded out with missiles.

I use to live by Edwards AFB and i always got low level high speed fly bys directly over my house by various different aircraft almost daily. Sometimes they shoot off flares.. its pretty bad ass.

Ive also had plenty of sonic booms over my house and i have had no window breakage. I would think he would have to be pretty low and/almost doing mach one in order for it to happen.

You'd bet wrong. They were parked for the same reason their very common in parts once removed sister in the F14 were parked for, they were old as hell, intense in maintenance like nothing else, and their original mission of low altitude high speed was proven in GW1 by the RAF Tornados as basically a suicide mission against modern ground to air weaponry. While the vark is cool as hell, I remember wishing like hell in text school I was on them, they were very old.

I was driving in the middle of nowhere, northern New Mexico back in the mid '90s, got buzzed by an F111. Never knew he was there 'til after he'd overflown the roof of my car at very low altitude. I like ta crapped my pants.

Remember the good ole days of sonic booms every now and then...Used to hear them once and a while when I was a kid (lived fairly close to Lackland AFB), havent heard one in years.

The Blue's "Sneak Pass" is done very close to Mach 1, that's why you don't hear it until it is right near above you.

In that video, is he coming from beneath the Golden Gate bridge? That angle is an awesome vid. Looks like the same flyby, but from a camera a little closer and looking back more.

This one:

They built the 111 on the other side of town from me and yeah we used to see them and hear the sonic booms all the time.

Had a pair go under me a real low level when I was flying a cessna one day, very cool to see.

Prandtl clouds do not have to occur while the entire plane is transonic or even near it.

They used to do this on an oil burner run just south of Richmond KY,SAC had a target scoring setup on the BG depot.(B-52s/F-4s/A-7s/B-1s also used to visit too).

The Russians have SAM systems that'll go right after these without much trouble. Plus "look down/shoot down AAMs.

I was fortunate enough to live underneath that route (OB-11/MTR-075), getting plenty of opportunities as an impressionable kid growing up during the 1980s to see many of those cool aircraft up close. The most common among them was the B-52, which seemed to comprise the overwhelming majority of aircraft I saw. But I also saw some F-111s and F-4s from time to time (god those things were loud and fast!), as well as some B-1B's later on.

I had a chance a few years ago on a forum to chat back and forth with some former SAC FB-111 drivers who flew this route. He said "technically", they were permitted to fly as low as 400 feet along this route. But he admitted that many pilots often flew even lower, in some cases, much lower. LOL. I once recall seeing a pair of F-4s in formation pass over the front lawn that were flying so low I could actually see the helmets through the sides of the canopies.

Too bad the radar site at Richmond was closed in 1994. Once it was history, so were my low level flights. I kinda always took for granted when I was a kid that those aircraft would always be passing through. Hell, I figured they flew that way everywhere. Even after all these years, I still miss seeing and hearing them.

Hiking at Philmont I suppose the F-111's flying in the valleys there were from Cannon AFB.

We were on a ridge and were able to look down into the cockpit! Scared the hell out of us at first and then we were jumping up and down. One of the coolest things I have seen.

My Dad was an avionics man with the 428th at Cannon and then at Nellis. I was only in elementary school at the time, but was well aware that the USAF was struggling to deal with avionics problems and the TFR. The kid who sat next to me in school lost his dad at night in Nevada flying the TFR. It was 20 years or more before they even found the plane and the bodies.

That said, there were plenty of F111s flying around Nellis. At Christmas the rounded up all the kids for a Christmas event in one of the hangars. At one point of the event, they hustled us all out to the doors that opened on the flight line because "Santa" was coming to down. Shortly afterward, and F111 flew by at low level. Fast. Loud. It was incredible. Another pass and the pilot pitched the F111 on its side and pulled back on the stick giving all of us kids a great view of Santa in his suit and hat flying the aircraft. The plane came in and landed and taxied up to the area in front of the hangar. A couple crew guys pushed up a stairway and out came Santa who was ushered into the hangar to the thrill of all us kids. He handed out presents for hours.

I also remember losing several airplanes on the way to and while they were in Southeast Asia. Combat Lancer or Harvest Reaper, I think they called it. The 428th's F-111s were painted with black bellies. "Lizard Bellies" they called them. When they came back, they put on a 'airshow' of sorts before they landed. Beat up Las Vegas and Nellis. As an elementary school kid, it was pretty exciting. Dad came back a few days later in a bright silver C-141.

Those guys are fucking insane. The local air show gets the Blue Angels like every other year. I remember playing on play ground equipment when I was a little shit-head and those guys, swear to fucking God, made a pass no more than 50ft above my head. Fucking studs.
