Have you downloaded anything this session / do you have the download manager running when you do that? That's supposed to be a big source of problems.
I'm running it with just 3 tabs, but I have the noscript extension running, and it's only using 40,000 K |

No, I haven't downloaded a thing today, and I rebooted this AM after installing the .NET 2.0 SDK. I do usually wind up with up to 30 tabs open briefly during my day, but the damn thing ought to free up that memory when I close the tabs. Crazy. Now that I have tabs in IE, I am seriously considering shitcanning Firefox. Having to shut down and re-open your browser at least once a day is colossaly fucking stupid. If I could figure out a way to open a new tab upon clicking the scroll wheel I'd do it. According to the developers, the problem is that when you close a tab, the cached images are never fucking freed. It's a core design problem they've been avoiding for a while now, but I was led to believe that version 1.5.x.x fixed it. If you are like me, opening dozens of forum and other site links, then combing through them and closing them, you wind up using half a gig of RAM in a few hours. Time to go check out Opera or something. |

I have four different windows open on three different desktops... using 45 meg.

type "about:config" in the address bar, and then right click and go to new-->integer
call this integer "browser.cache.memory.capacity" and give it a value of 65536. This will give firefox a maximum amount of memory of 64mb. if you want a different value, just take 1024 times the amount of megabytes RAM you want firefox to use, and use that for the value. *edit* the reason firefox uses so much ram is not a memory leak. by default, firefox stores something like the previous 32 pages you have been to in each tab. so, you have 8 tabs open, thats 256 pages, with images intact, in your memory. no memory leak, just a feature that was setup improperly :P |

Ive found it has little to do with the number of tabs open. Its how many sites you have gone to during the session - and how big the stuff you have downloaded is (pics, audio, movies, etc). Its a cache issue - from what I understand. You need to shut her down every so often. I usually do around 300mb. That should dump it out.
Even with the bug, I will never go back to IE. Even when I had 1/2 as much RAM, it was easier to use shut down firefox once a day than use IE. |

Nope. I've tried that, along with the various other tweaks, like trimming the working set on a minimize and max total viewers for fast back/forward. I think there was another one on caching chrome (form controls). I'm going to go back through my list of Firefox hacks and make sure all that stuff is tuned up right. This is a fairly new install so I need to double check. And I usually have between 18-35 tabs open, so yeah, we are talking a shitload of RAM use. Try having Visual Studio, Media Player, Outlook, MS Project, and Firefox open all at the same time. 2GB memory use is not uncommon at all.

+1 Firefox gets laggy towards the 'end' - and if I don't close it soon after getting laggy, it crashes, taking my 50 tabs with it. I went back to 1.0.7 because it was more stable than 1.5 w/ 40 tabs open. |

Yeah, that happens a lot on my other machine. It will start to hang for a few seconds when you switch tabs, and sometimes you can't switch tabs. Every now and then it will just dump, which is always when I have been researching something and I lose what I had found. |

Firefox developers said the extremely high memory usage is not a problem it is a feature…
 It is pretty obvious by now they don’t know how to fix the problem… use Opera. |

Oh believe me, I am a Nazi about unused services running, and dipshit processes such as "realupdate", the java update crap, etc. But this machine at the time had open: Visio Excel Firefox Foxit Reader (a PDF reader) SQL Server Visual Studio's Web Server Visual Studio Outlook Media Player Windows Desktop Search and possibly Microsoft Project Add to that a couple of ATI video utilities or what have you, and you can see 60 processes pretty easily. When I was a server admin, however, I could get as low as 8 or 10 on a dedicated role server. That was years ago in Win 2000 though - nowadays more things are services and things are even broken out more. Right now I have 58 processes running, and I am using 858MB of RAM. |

For the record, one can install the MSN toolbar and gain not only the Desktop Search that is to be included with Vista, but also tabbed browsing. toolbar.msn.com |

Wow, I love Maxthon. I already got it set up just like my Mozilla (the standard options) like middle-click open a link in a new tab, etc. I love the fact I can set up the thing to close a tab when I middle-click the tab itself. Awesome browser, with tons of options. So far it looks like I will be a Maxthon convert. Thanks! |

Ha, I keep finding cool stuff, like being able to double-click on the tab bar and open a new tab. So this thing uses the IE engine? I see an option to "Use Gecko Engine" - I assume you can open a tab using Firefox, within Maxthon, as well? Dude, with as much talk as there is on Arfcom about Firefox, and browsers in general, I think you need to post a thread introducing Maxthon and some of the cool features. |

Yes, Maxthon uses the IE engine. Of course I never stopped using IE and jumped on the FF bandwagon. I tried it twice and it I thought it sucked. |

Try installing the CTP version of Windows Vista.
After a cold boot, it was using over 500mb, with nothing running. And the CPU usage keeps floating around 10%. |
