I just came home from the Post Office, They are of course closed on Monday New Years day BUT now they are also closed on Tuesday for the "National Day of Mourning" for President Ford. I wonder what this extra paid day is costing us for the postal and all other Federal people plus here in Mi the State closes on Federal days off. And our mail will be fked up til Wed or Thurs cause it always is after even one normal mail day off

you think your mail is fucked up way up there?
we're still trying to recover from last weeks snow mess! USPS.. GET YOUR ASSES TO WORK! I swear, the USPS is too big for its britches. they ran out of stamps (locally) just after thanksgiving (I guess they didn't see the umpteenth anual Christmas rush happening) and the same thing with the number of counter workers... HELLO, like there is a line 10,000 people long out here!!!! |
I have a friend who is a US Postal Inspector. Last night at 11pm I was talking to him when he got a phone call. A local agency found suspicous powder and had no one with biohazzard training to help. He bid me good bye and left immediately to don his biohazzard suit, putting his life on the line to help protect his fellow citizens.
That's a pretty broad brush you're painting with there. Not all USPS employees are 9-5 and no holidays. |
USPS is no longer under the Fed. Hasn't been for years, my FIL works there.

Uhhh thank Pres. Bush and his executive order... while your at it, yell at Wall Street and most federal gov't offices for being closed too.

Build a bridge, and get over it.
This place has some serious whiners... |

Even if the color doesn't fit and makes the painter look like someone with no taste..... |

And you remember that as your paying your State and federal taxes |

About a Billion dollars. It is not possible to pin down the exact cost of government, but it costs about a billion dollars a day to operate.

Grandma used to get pissed when the mail or the newspaper was late...
damm right! we had people in our center working 6 days 12 hours in the 2weeks leading up to christmas. I am a full time postal worker and will be working Tuesday. so bite me OP |
Pfft, I work for Uncle Sam, not only do I have to work Monday, I have to work Tuesday too. I will be getting holiday pay for both in the same pay period.
I know, I am fucking pissed I am waiting on a 9mm upper and a bunch of other stuff. |

Last time I saw this much bitching over nothing, it was a room full of women. Congratulations.
Shouldn't be costing you or anyone else one red cent. They get paid the same whether they work that day or not. It's not overtime, they're not getting paid "MORE" to be off. |

So the Millions of dollars in "tax Payers" money that they recieve for staying home comes from where? You seem to forget that they are being paid a days wages for Not working. I am old school, when you do not work you do not get paid. |
They're not getting paid anymore than they already would have been. You ever get paid for taking time off for funeral leave? Sick time? Same thing - no work and still get paid. As for the USPS, they can do what they want - they get zero funds from the federal govt. ETA: Maybe the next time a former US President is going to die, he should check w/ you and make sure the timing won't mess up your life for a day or so. |
Nice ASSumption. Last time we made ASSumptions like that people died from anthrax. |

First the post office receives absolutely NO tax money from state level or federal, it runs solely on the postal revenue it brings in. It is run like a business, so don't worry about your tax dollars being wasted for their day off Tuesday. For the record I argee its silly to have tuesday off, but it wasn't their choice. Yes I work at USPS. |

First as I said earlier the postal service is not funded through taxes, secondly they are not getting out of any work there is still going to be just as much mail to deliver they will just have a double load wednesday. Glad I'm off wednesday and only work Thursday, friday, and satuday |
point taken on the PO but that still leaves all the other State and Federal workers who do recieve payment thru tax dollars. |

Okay, I'm going to go out on a limb here and assume you actually earned those wings in your avatar. That means you were (or are) at one time in the military. So you're saying you never took any time off while in the military. By your own statement, "when you do not work you do not get paid". We all know the military is paid to be on duty 24/7 365 days a year (366 in leap years). So since you're "old school", you would not have dreamed of taking a holiday, weekend, leave or 4 day pass and getting a paycheck that included those days. If you say you didn't, then you are a prevaricator, or a hypocrite (or both). You did it and you know it. What these folks are doing is no different. They have been order by the President to cease operations on that one day in honor of a past President. The same order was given at our local military bases. Only essential personnel are being required to report. Are they wrong too for obeying the order of their Commander In Chief?? Maybe you think they are lazy too? I'd be real careful responding to that on this board. I think you get my point. If you were in the military (as it seems), you got days off with pay just as these postal employees are getting. I'd wager my next paycheck that you didn't complain when you were the one getting. So, you are in no position to complain about it now, IMHO. |

I like what he said, so I quoted it. I was just going to say f**k you and go on. I am an RCA for the USPS. I am scared to death that my regular is going to call me and tell me to work Wednesday. You can trust me on the fact that every carrier out there world much rather work Tuesday. You have no idea what it means to have 3 days in a row of mail build up. All the processing facilities are still operating, so those employees are still working so Saturday, Sunday, and Tuesdays mail will be waiting there Wednesday morning when the carriers arrive. I wish you had to carry it. You would understand. I am 41 years old. Carrying a rural route is the hardest public job on avarage I have ever done. Wednesday, it will be like doing 3 day in 1. BTW, RCA's and TRC's don't get paid for that Tuesday, but many will catch the hell of it. Lastly, that DOWP for regular carriers won't cost the taxpayers one cent. The USPS is totally self supporting. Most of our revenue comes from all that junk mail you get. it's also you you can mail a first class letter at the bargain rate of .39 |

Please review and adhere to the conduct code so you don't make that same mistake again. |

Anyone else think this was going to be about a hot postal carrier?

This thread was supposed to be about Tax dollars wasted on a Federal day off, I give the point that the USPS went semi private but I still have a problem with the rest of the Fed and State workers being paid for something like this. Comparing Military to USPS or any other Federal job is not a workable comparison IMO. I will overlook your sarcastic insinuations Mr "go out on a limb" and tell you politely that yes the Wings are earned, they were earned probably before you were born ( 1964 ) C/1/503d PIR 173d Abn Brigade (SEP) 1st to RVN 05 May 1965 |

Not quite done crying yet, huh ? |

+1000 The USPS is self-sufficient. Remember when the .gov shut down because of lack of funding? Well, the USPS kept on going because they don't get tax dollars (or very little anyway). I mailed a package to Canada and some fuck at customs stole it. The Canadian post office charges you 15% sales tax on stamps. The U.S. has by far the best postal system in the world bar none. |
Nope, it wasn't before I was born. I earned mine too, only I have Masters. I wasn't aware we were comparing credentials. But since you asked, 1st Bn/ 10th SFGA, Bad Tolz, Germany. Prior to that 2nd Platoon 421st Air Ambulance Co (Dustoff) Hohenfels, Germany. There are many others before I retired but those are the two that mean the most to me. BTW, have a Happy New Year. De Oppresso Liber. |

Breaking news from 10 years ago ... the USPS actually makes a profit! The military members at our command were also given the day off ... care to bitch some more?
I assume then that you are a former Army Medic, I salute you and May All Your landings be soft.. Happy New Year to you too. |

Me too. I'll probably get stiffed on holiday pay for Tuesday, but I was already working anyway. If not, I won't give it back. I'm underpaid anyway. George did it! (This time, he really DID do it). |

all i know is that i sent a pkg to my son, express mail [ $30] , at Camp Leguene. the pkg got there and some sunofabitch initialed that my son was notified 3 times that he had a pkg to pick up, when in fact he was NEVER notified. the pkg was sent back to me and the day i got it my son called asking if i'd sent it out yet.i called the 1-800 customer service number and was told an investigater would look into it and contact me for the details within 2 days. 2 days later a local post master [ not my post office] called me asking whats the problem, when i explained she said " oh no , you'll have to contact the post office on the base to find out what happened". so in essence i paid usps $30 to lie to me and pass the buck when i asked questions. the day i got the pkg back at my local post office and asked what happened [ knowing my son was expecting it] a lady in line behind me said that next time to use UPS since she'd had the same problems with her son in the marines and that he'd get mail quicker in Iraq than he did when in Camp Pendleton , and she's since switched to UPS. just a few weeks ago i ordered a CD thru Amazon and their supplier in Calif sent me an e-mail stating that USPS gave them a different address for me than what Amazon gave them. i responded back with the CORRECT address and the girl wrote back that she's aware that USPS changes peoples addresses at" will" , and thats why she sent me the e-mail to confirm things. also my mothers paycheck was sent to jacksonville , FL . WHY ? who knows!! town and zip codes are not even similar. 3 weeks went by until they wrote her a new check, then the original came in with the postmark from Jacksonville. ] which she gave back to her employer] yep lets raise them rates some more there USPS for all that hard work it really deserved. at least the deliver the junk mail on time and to the right addresses !!

I hear ya, but the USPS is still the best in the world. My parents are originally from Hungary and when they send packages only about 50% get there. It's like this in most countries. |
Back in the 50's they used to deliver mail twice a day during the week and once on Saturdays......or so I'm told.
There's no mail delivery on Saturday in Canada, nor are they open for business. |
