What is an FAL built on an Imbel receiver with a synthetic thumbhole stock worth?

In other words, the sum of the parts is greater than the whole. [:D]  Seeing as last I checked, one would be hard pressed to build one at home for less than $700 (Including shipping costs and transfer fees)

The last pprice I saw on Imbel receivers was $200.

G-1 kits run as low as $125.

US parts kit, a quality one, goes for $90.

If each of the above costs $20 for shipping, and we have a dealers cost of $20 for the reciever, we add in another $80, and the final cost is:

$495.

This assumes you don't have to buy any gunsmithing books or vidoes, tools, and that you are happy with the existing finish.

Keep in mind that there are two FAL Imbel receivers floating around. The one with the Imbel gear logo is the good one. If the gun is assembled on an Imbel receiver with lettering that looks like a dot matrix printer, it's a Century assembeled FAL and your're taking your chances.  They sell for ~ $400 at gun shows.

It depends on the quality (or perceived quality) of the US parts, the kind of kit you use, and who builds it.

For instance, a complete set of DSA internals runs around $150 or more (H/T/S, gas piston, etc.) Tapco/FSE internals are cheaper, but some say DSA internals are better.

The good Steyr STG58 kits are close to $300 now.

Gear Logo Imbel receiver $240 or so.

A master FAL gunsmith like Gunplumber may charge up to $350 for a complete build with refinishing. The end result will be of higher quality (fit and finish) than the STG58s you get from DSA.

So, the value of such a gun could range from $450 to $1,000+ depending on the factors mentioned above.
