Probably a stupid question but which would you get? I have an Olympic Arms CAR-97 (with new vert grip/rail from Advanced Armament - $99 and kicks much ass) w/ Compact ACOG 3x24 with Amber Tri and a Tikka SS 7MM Mag w/ Leupold VariX III 4.5-14x40 for reach out and smoke something capability... The fact is I love the M1A but I am intrigued by the STG58C Scout Carbine on Enterprise Arms' website. I would be curious to hear what you think. If I did the M1A it would be the Syn Stock with Stainless...I am pretty sure the M1A would be more accurate than the FAL but what the hell do I know...I need your help.

I have a standard M1A and I love it. It shoots great. Mags aren't cheap cheap. But they are reasonably priced and easy to come by(let's face reality new FAL mags would cost a lot more than $5 dollars, we get them for that price because they are used surplus mags that no one wants anymore). Its an accurate rifle. It handles well. It breaks down like a dream. And its utterly reliable. The AK-47 based its action on that of the M-1 Garand. The M1A uses virtually the same action as the M-1 Garand. That's all you need to know. -SS

I'd go with the FAL, because parts cheaper and far more readily available, as well as mags. The MAIN reason I'd go with the FAL though is it is the "eviler" of the 2. A M-1A looks rather 'sporting' to me.

Have you seen an M14 in an E2 stock? cpermd

FAL, but I wouldn't turn my nose up at either. Today FAL mags are cheap - stock up on 'em and get the FAL. There isn't a big difference between the two guns in capability, but the FAL fieldstrips better and has an adjustable gas system AND it's wayy cheaper when you factor in the cost of a dozen or two magazines. In Canada, it's not even a contest - neither. Both are prohibited but are roughly similar to the nonrestricted M1 Garand, which has better ergonomics than either if you ignore the thumb feature. Garand clips are exempt from the Cartridge Magazine Control Regulations - FAL and M1A clips are limited to 5 shots.

I own both. And I prefer the M1A..it just feels, handles and shoots better. Though when it comes to cleaning..the FAL is easier. Seeing how you are in Kali. You can't get a FAL unless you remove the Pistol Grip or thumbhole stock. So..you might as well..as save your money and get an M1A.

I prefer the M14/M1A Sold My FAL. To me, the M14 jst feels right. Both are great rifles.

The state you live in has already dictated your choice. You can still buy a CA castrated M1a rifle in CA, also have recently seen 5 and 10 round mags popping up. No CA legal FALs that I know of.

I had an FAL and traded it up towards an M1A Supermatch and have never looked back. The M1A just feels good[8D]

Sorry...your neighbors made your choice for you. No FALs permitted in California. Ugly black rifles with big mags not wanted out there. They go to schools and kill lots of innocent kids. [puke]

I have both a Norchinko M14 Sporter and a Springfield Scout. I love them and recommend them. I think the M-14 sights are better.

M1A, but it is just me. I like the rifle much better than the FAL.

I just purchased a DSA FAL and like it but will never get used to be slammed in the cheek after each round. I have to paste my cheek against the butt to get a proper sight picture. My Springfield M1A is still the finest shooting firearm I own bar none!

I have a FAL, anyone have a M1A that they are willing to loan me (lend-lease), so I can decide for myself. OSA

I have both and I would agree to get both, if possible. I believe the M1A is inherently more accurate, but to me, the FAL is a lot more fun to shoot. My FAL fits me way better than my M14 parts gun. John

A lot of people dismiss the FAL for it's lack of accuracy VS. an M1A. Out of thr box that may be true BUT almost evryone says an M1A must be glass bedded & almost all the pro M1A posts recommend custom work for long range accuracy. I know a custom heavy barrel FAL will shoot almost as well as a custom heavy barrel M1A. Maybe the difference in bolt systems & triggers groups keep the M1A at the top??
