Let me start by saying I think F3K (1.5m hand launch gliders) is the shizzle and I can't wait to try it. These days it is discus launch gliders, and they are molded carbon and cost as much as a fancy AR when built. Perhaps I'll have one some day.

The electric variant (F5K) is slowly gaining popularity, and opens up design parameters since it doesn't have to survive being slung around violently at launch. I found a wooden F5K model, one of my other club members has one and I ordered my own. It's from FlightPoint in Ukraine.

Still waiting for it to come, and the servos I ordered from China, but I'm pretty excited to build it. It should be around $250 or so all up. I ordered a "B grade" version, since I am on a tight budget and enjoy building anyways.

Any F3K or F5K flyers here?

There are a lot of options around.  I am currently building a DJ Aerotech Ascension, similar idea in 2m F3RES.

I need to get around to bagging some DLG wings, I have a fuse mold already, I think an electric DLG would be handy.

Damn I hate these treads. They make me want to get the gliders that I have not flown since the late 80s out and take them to the field.

My Aquila I built in the late 70s and flew in the late 80s.

I’d love to try this, but I imagine there would be fatalities

Rock crawlers brought me back to RC, and DS brought me back to flying.

I'm still working on finding the groove in the simulator.

Those micros are beautiful. If I didn't live someplace where a low wind day is 8-10 mph...

Something like that, we had a thread here on it, someone also reset the foamie record that same day and location.

I have 3D printed models I am building for learning slope and DS. Apparently you crash often learning DS...

For now I have an awesome thermal site a short drive away and can walk to a local slope site.

F3L (F3RES) is my club's predominant contest, F5L is growing fast, I think I am the only member who has built a pure sailplane in a couple years. It is kind of nice not to have to screw with a high start, and makes practice 10x easier because every time you make a mistake you aren't back on the ground. They use an electronic cutoff in contests for the powered sailplanes. I am building an F5L ship after this F5K one, for all those reasons.

Kit has arrived. About two weeks to arrive from Ukraine, not bad at all.

Everything arrived in great condition.

I have a pile of EMax ES9051 servos coming from China, this will be a six servo airplane so it will take a few of them.

Also ordered an ESC for it, a little 20A unit.

Need to order a motor, it takes a little 15mm x 7mm outrunner. Also need to order some flight batteries.

Looks nice and good price, but I didn’t  look for shipping cost
Plus it’s apparently a kit and not pre built and covered

Also for the DLGs it’s good to keep tabs on the classifieds in RCG and look for the guys selling off their used gliders to make room for the newest hot item.  Save a few hundred dollars maybe

Shipping was free...

I started punching out parts, my "B" grade kit is pretty damn good.

Got the fuse sides and bottom glued together.

Have one big problem, or shall I say, small problem. I have no receiver small enough to fit in the bay provided.

Guess I am going to have to buy a FrSky radio and receiver to finish the dang thing. I could maybe use my existing radio (FlySky TH9X), unfortunately mine is the old one and uses AFHDS instead of AFHDS2. So that limits me to one of two receivers, a 6 ch and 9 ch one. If the six ch is going to fit, I'd need to replace the vertical headers with 90 deg headers.

The project continues. Someone in my club said to use clear plastic wrap to protect the plans, I got to spend 30" removing that shit from the rudder, I guess CA sticks to the Costco plastic wrap really freaking well.

Back to wax paper, might give parchment a shot too. FWIW I use CA semi-rarely, I use aliphatic resin applied with a tiny paint brush anywhere I can. For carbon to wood or carbon to plastic I go with CA.

On this model, all the wing LEs are carbon, with carbon spars, and carbon TEs.

Generally cling wrap works, but isn't great IMHO.  I have used Reynolds Cut-Rite wax paper for years.  Works well.

Sweet! It is my favorite kit I have ever built already.

I got the nutplates together a couple days ago but life has gotten in the way of building the last few days.

I have to clean the refrigerator (everyone's favorite job) on Friday and I have a F3L contest on Saturday. Maybe I can do some building Sunday.

The servos and ESC should be coming this weekend or early next week.

How about some pics of the progress man.

Our F3F races have been cancelled all year so far from a landslide on the road into the site.   I still F5J but half my RC glider entertainment has been seriously curtailed.

A couple of the guys at the thermal field have some smaller E stuff,  haven't really seen much because I normally only head over there on F5J contest days.

Got the tail together, and the nutplates.

Fuse sides and bottom together today.

I stared at the first pic for a good 30 seconds trying to understand your fuse pod mold.  Guess it is a handle to your freezer.

Yeah my freezer is one of the places I can set stuff, I build in my mechanical/reloading room.

No molding of stuff at my shop yet...I just made the discovery that my work has a large-ish vacuum oven, big enough to make RC sailplane parts. Must. Resist. The. Urge...to lay up airplane parts.

My parcel with the Maverick kit just showed up today, in time for my birthday present to myself.
But I can make no promises as to when it might be completed
Too many other things which must be done.

I have to work for a living still and raise my kid I was coming to update this today as I finally got a few days to get some work done.

I have got the wing 80% together, sanding and fitting now. Wing Panels

Fuse is ready to cover.

I need to order a receiver for it and a battery still. I did join OpenTX master race at last, so that makes my life a little easier.

Scored a Fun Cub for $50 and an Easy Glider Pro for $100 too
Foamies

Edit: There's a 3dLabPrint Hawker Hurricane "kit" inside that tub the Fun Cub is resting on

and that is how I learned my traditional paint methods no workee on PLA.

Print the plane in the primary color and then shoot the stripes or what have you with some Krylon Fusion.

The LW PLA models from 3dLabPrint have a smooth almost fabric-like texture. They take that el cheapo water-based acrylic craft paint beautifully.  LW PLA does take paint much nicer than PLA since it has a porous matte texture.

Wing is done-ish

Need to do some of the detail work. Also got a more appropriately sized ESC.

Weather has been too good for building, been flying every other day the past week.
