Get all the sleep you can now.    Sleep any spare moment you have, if you can not fall asleep, drink a bottle of NyQuil or two.  Find a cat, practice wiping this stuff of its ass at random times throughout the night for three-four days.

If you wife is going to breastfeed, wake her up every two hours, then comfort her for 20-40 minutes, then go to sleep, and repeat.

If you have any vacation time saved up, take it.

In the end, it is all VERY worth it.

Hayden, born 6-17-11@13:11.

7lbs 10oz   20"

Fathers day came early

Don't worry, the tar poop doesn't last long

Also, don't wish he can crawl, walk, or talk.  Once he does, its all downhill

DOH! No one told you the trick for muconium. Coat their ass in vasoline, the muconium won't stick to the skin and it wipes right off.

Congrats.

Ohh and:
Desitin > Balmex
Pampers for girls, huggies for boys.
Graco or some other babyseat that snaps into the carraige makes life much easier.

That is no shit.

I'm a happy father to a 13m old...  once she figured out that she could more efficiently escape on two feet than her knees, it went downhill FAST.

Nope, no one told me that trick.   It is starting to clear up, so I am not sure if I will get to use it.

We have a Graco seat and it is pretty simple.   I bought two bases for it.  One for the mothers car, and one for my jeep.  Both using the Latch system (I had not noticed the bars in the seat until I bought a car seat.)

Congrats!

Use olive oil after cleaning him up.  Oil him up good.  Everything will wipe off clean next time, and it really won't last very long (a week or two tops).

My boy turned 4 mos, 3 weeks yesterday.  I think I'm averaging 2.5 hours of sleep per 24 now.

Trying to get my almost 1 year old now to sleep in his crib was a nightmare.  But he finially figured it out and it is amazing.  I alsmot forgot what a "good nights sleep" was.

Don't know about girls, but for my boy, Huggies leaked like crazy.  Pampers worked, but too expense and drained his gun fund too much.  Target brand worked as well as pampers and were much cheaper.

Really? Huggies ave gotten excellent reviews by boy-moms. We try to get pampers, they are maybe a dollar more around here but we coupon all the time so it comes out pretty good. I think we got 164 diapers for like $16 last trip. Its worth not needing to wash poo off clothes because the diaper didn't hold it in.

A baby is an excuse to build a tactical diaper bag and get yourself a bunch of Maxpedition gear.

Start a Coverdell ESA and a 529-plan.

Get a kid carrier backpack. They're great.

I've got a five-year-old and a seven-month-old.

Lol.  I thought, once they are old enough to crawl it will be easier, mine both went straight from not moving to walking....One promptly dove into a coffee table and split his eye, the other probably would have if we hadn't gotten rid of it.  I thought once they can talk and tell me what they want need it'll be okay.  I'm now longing for the days before they could talk as apparently with the development of speech came attitude and personality.  I love my kids but I hate that them being babies went by so quick, I hate even worse that I wished it by.  Onc ethey can move they don't let you hold them and cuddle nearly as much.   I miss the days of them being "swaddled" up and just staring at me while we sat/rocked.

When you haven't slept for 36 hours because your son is screaming with a teething rash, $8 is a small price to pay.

We just had our first on 6/10...he's 10 days old and just had photos done today. The tar poo didn't last long, but I can already tell he's a sharpshooter. He peed all over my shirt today while I was holding him for a pic. Haven't gotten much sleep but we couldn't be happier. Truly Blessed!

Hide the peanut butter (covered his entire mattress, I just threw it away), maple syrup (redecorated living room carpet, the smell stays forever) , and cool whip (the underside of the kitchen table will never be the same)

I know what you mean.     My wife had a cesarian section, so I get up and hand her the baby in a rocking chair, then burp him after he is done eating.

We had to take him to get his tip sniped this morning, and I go back to work tomorrow.  This could be an interesting night.

No kidding.

I've got a Jumbo Versapack, and that thing is great.  By day, I take it to work and carry my lunch, thumb drive, and other odds and ends in it.  On the weekends, it hauls bottles and diapers.

The side pouch fits a Nintendo DS perfectly.  The top pouch holds an Oakley hard case perfectly.  I added a flashlight pouch for my 6P, and the CCW compartment fits a Crossbreed "Ohai" plus a 2x mag elastic holder like it was made for it.  Which, I guess it was.

You DO want to add a larger pull tab for the CCW compartment; look at Mil-Spec Monkey's videos on the subject.  It takes all of five minutes with some paracord.

Patches are a given.  I've got St. Michael, Zombie Hunter, and a US Flag on the top.

When I got it, I wasn't sure if I really needed an $8 water bottle, but having a quart in a Nalgene that stays fresh is great.  I drink a lot more water now that I always have it on hand.

Other stuff, I packed the front pouch full of medical gear and tools.  I've got a multitool, firestarter, a small first-aid kit (the Adventure ultralight/waterproof "0.3" kits are really nice), and lots of baby stuff in there.  Tube of vaseline, small tube of Desitin, swabs, wipes, etc.

Yeah, it's still a man purse.  But what the heck, everyone carries a bag to work nowadays.  And mine cost less than any of the leather ones, is just as durable (maybe even more), and it holds a lot more stuff.  It's comfortable on my bike and it holds everything I need and then some.

I learned a few things as a kid.   My dad was gone half the year (rotational work in Egypt,India,Algeria,Angola, and the Congo).  I was the oldest of four kids, so I got my fair share of diapers and making sure my siblings did not go tits up.

If you don't have a decent camera/camcorder get one before the baby comes. Time goes by fast even when the sleepless nights seem like they will go on forever. You'll want to remember it. Being up in the middle of the night with a crying baby isn't fun but when they settle down and get to sleep in your arms, it is just the two of you in the dark, those are memories that will stay with you the rest of your life.

Truth, well said.

I was just telling my wife last night as I carried our youngest to bed, how awesome it is to hold a sleeping baby, his head on your shoulder, and the sound of his breathing.
