Ever wonder where the phrase "That's what she said" comes from? This lady is "she"
Hopefully not a dupe, I searched and didn't find it. Pretty funny, but NSFW or small children. Funny or Die |

I always thought it came from The Office. That's what she said! That has been around long before The Office. |

Its a common phrase here in the UK, so common it was used in the original version of the Office starring Ricky Gervais.
Then of course he wrote an American version starring Steve Carrell and you guys got to know the phrase. So the real questions is finding out where in the UK it originated. |

Heard in on the Wayne's World skits first. Not sure if it existed before that.

I hope whoever created that hears it everyday and regrets it. One of the most irritating sayings to ever become popular. Go ahead, quote me and say "that's what she said."

This thread isn't really about where the phrase came from, watch the video, it is funny. This was meant as a joke, not as a serious discovery effort. |

Unless Gervais "wrote" that gag in the late 70's when we were tossing it around at high school keg parties, that's not where it came from... |

I first heard it going through firefighter school. There are a lot of opportunities to use it in that world.

Quoted: I remember this from when I was an 8 year old kid. I am 47. yeah "that's what she said" jokes have been around long before TV was invented. (not implying 47 is older than TV...) |

Hmm, I just used the phrase at lunch when the waitress commented on how big the bottle of hot sauce was that I brought with me.

Grew up in the bronx and all of the black girls were saying it around 1986. That's what makes it funny. It's the fact that white people (Esp brits) are saying something that is quintessentally a ghetto thing.

The earliest confirmed "That's what she said" joke is in an architectural find in Upper Egypt. On a massive pillar is written in early hieroglyphics, no later than 3000 BC, "Behold the mighty column of the Pharaohs, reaching ever towards the sky, solid and everlasting." Faint remnants of paint in scrawled hieratic, probably rather later, mark out "so she says."
A Sumerian cuneiform tablet fragment is thought by some to say "[text missing] a man who it is a shame to have known, full of despair and desperation. To this the grain-farmer replied, 'indeed this is also what the young woman from Ur has said.'" Others think that without context, it may be a part of a story. Some insist it is better translated as a recipe for bread. In any case, this joke was long lost to antiquity, as it continued shortly into some early Hebrew writings and disappeared from our records around 1600BC, only to be revived in the modern fashion in the early-mid 20th century. A recording of sound tests for Hitchcock's 1929 film "Blackmail" contains the phrase "as the girl said to the soldier," and the rest is, as they say, history. |

I've been hearing "that's what she said" for maybe 12 years or so for sure. I don't know how much further back it goes than that............................................................ and that's what she said!
