I did, what a weird week!!

0r at least blow his head off in the bathroom, or in his office the last day.  

First off, it wasn't me.  I had a rough week with citrix, and Term server, but I went to the pistol range Friday night to let off steam. [;)]

It was our HR guy that was liad-off, and his last day was Thurs.  They let him stay on 30 days after he was told.  I think it was a bad idea.  
A little on the guy, then why I was worried.  
First off, white male, late 40's or 50's.  Has a masters,  2 kids, and wife.   In this past year, his mom was put into a home, his brother was shot dead by the in-laws family, and it was ruled self-defense.  Guy went looking for trouble.  One daughter is getting into trouble, smoking cigs, drinking at school. Has a pic of her wearing a T-shirt, with the "special-K" logo on it.  
(Didnt say anything about that)

Now he gets laid off from a job he has had for over 5 years.  Hard worker, always there.  A company man, a true HR person.  

Now why I was worried.  The month he was given notice, he was becoming more angry, sometimes it even looked like he was going to break down. He give me work to do about his PC, even up to the last day.  
1. Wanted to ship his PC back to corp on Weds, to make "sure" he didnt get charged for it (LAPTOP).
Told him I do it for him, I am the tech, still giving me trouble.  I do that for him anyways. (I wanted the PC for the office)  
Then he wanted me to setup a PC for his last day in his office.
The director of the office had to step in, and tell him to listen to me.  
2. We started IP address change on Wed,  First did the networked printers.  Issue came up with w2k, and HP jet card.  Ports did not like the change in w2k. Easy, create new ports, etc.  He had a networked printer, and I left it for later.  He was leaving, etc. No one else used it.  Come Thurs, the last day, calls me to fix it. Fine, I do, and I see the guy is printing out TONS of email.

Ok, back to the story.  


Now, after talking to the director, I come to find out his last day was supposed to be Tues, not Thurs.  

He stayed on till Thurs, cause he said he took some PTO time off.  
More weird.  

That is when the director canceled the going
away party for him.  She had enough of his BS too.  

Now on the last day, this is what I freaked on, maybe I was wrong, but you had to be there.  

I left the gig at 3:30 pm, cause I had to come back to do some DB testing during our peak time at 6:00 pm.
Went and worked out, then came from the gym.

When I left, I said bye to the guy.  I figured he was out of there soon.  

When I got back at 6:00 pm,

HE WAS STILL THERE!!!  

He got in around 7:30 am that morning. Also, he was wearing a cap the company gave out on a promotion, all day!! Even had it on when I got back in.  

I even said to him at 6:00 pm, "you still here???"  

He was there till 7:00 pm!!  WEIRD!!!  

I wouldn't stick around on a job I was getting fired at.  OR where their damm hat either.  

When I saw him that night, I really thought it would be a good time to have CCW.  

Since I live in Illinois, no dice.  All we get is six seconds to safety, and I dont pratice that at work.  I would of had to run out to the car to do anything, rack the slide,  then run back in.  

I really thought the guy was going to blow his head off, he looked like a beat-up animal.  Or come back for revenge.

The next day, I told the office manager what I saw, and told her, he should not be let into the building.  

I didnt want to be working at the next NAV-STAR.

I also talked to the ADMIN of the director, she even said the guy was getting angry, and he almost broke down in front of her.  She thought it was a good idea.  

Ok, so, was I wrong to err on the side of caution?
Am I too paranoid, cause I visit this board too much?

I went to the  print server to see what was going  on.  I looked into the que to see if it was stuck, that is when I saw the "outlook, memo style"  jobs in there. Which means email.  
I just saw maybe about 100 qued up to go.

I forgot,
the guy did not have a interview the whole time he was given noticed.
He said there was nothing in the paper for HR.
 
The market is rough.

c-rock, difficult call.  Tough job market, most likely no job prospects, and two kids can (should) worry anyone.  As you said, he was a hard worker.  That makes losing the job even harder to take.  So, you either headed-off a tragedy or make his life even worse.  My guess is that we can't really help you w/ that decision.  It's up to your gut feeling.z

I would of walked right up to him and said, "Hey, your attempt at preserving your feeble career is clogging up my print queue."  And when he said, "Sorry."  I would have said, "Don't apologize to me.  Apologize to your wife and family for being such a loser."

Then I would've snatched that company ball cap off his head and cut the company logo off of it with a CRKT CRawford-Kasper folder and placed it back on his head.  "Now, why don't you go out and learn some type of skill you fuck.", would have been my parting advice.

(I guess I might have just a wee problem with HR people.)

Those are the kind to worry about.  But it sounds like it all came out in the wash.

I was laid off on November 13th, along with a number of other people.  I showed up for work that morning and there were 2 armed city police officers centrally located in the building.  I thought WTF?  Turns out one of the other guys laid off was noted for his temper, and it came up in some management meeting that he was a gun owner.  I heard this later via the grape vine.  Frankly, I thought having the police there was a cheap shot.

It's not the "gun nuts" that we need to worry about.  It's the "nuts".

I was the subject of a lot of going postal voicemail jokes in the company I got laid off from last Dec. When I got my 2 week notice,  the joking stopped.  I was from Utah, gunowner, hunter, so I HAD to be somekindofanutrightwingnazi.

c-rock, I'm amazed that anyone was able to see this person after his dismissal, let alone say goodbye. Where I work, the fired person is led by security from the exit interview directly out the door (after a brief stop to gather coats and a few personal effects). No notices are posted. The fired person quickly becomes a rumor. This applies to every dismissed person, man or woman gunowner & non-gunowner alike.

Ditto, my wife works for the Feds and when they decide to let someone go, they have security collect their passes, escort them to the door, and then have their personal effects from their desk, etc., delivered by FedEx to them the next day!

There's no coming back into the workplace, fer sure!

I don't think you know much about employment laws, OWDPA, and others. He was printing out his email to setup his case.

Yeah, where I work they "Walk out" the fired (ex)employee and get thier magnetic key that opens the turnsiles most of us lowly peons use to enter the building. Not that it means much, building security is so loose that I've seen city parks that are harder to get into. Our "Security guards" are mostly tasked with answering the phone, acting as receptionists and looking at the (unlocked) exterior doors a couple times a night. In the summer the doors stand open all day/ all night, makes me feel safe!

There are weird people working every where, most of them won't go "postal" but I'd wonder about a guy like c-rock describes!
