15 minutes ago I was sleeping. A VERY loud crash woke me up, and I think I was also having some creepy dream, to add to the "terror". I leapt out of bed, gun in hand and charged, shaking, into the den to see what had happened. It honestly sounded like someone had kicked my door in. A large picture (4x6 foot) had fallen off the wall, and the breaking wood frame and glass is what made such a racket.

I felt something funny on my chest, and looked down to see that I was covered in blood. All over the carpet too. I think a blood vessel in my nose broke for some reason. I have had bloody noses in the past, and pressure for a minute or so clots them right up. This has happened if I am outside or something, and it's a hot, dusty, windy day. I get them very rarely.

This nosebleed though won't stop. I am pressing on it with a towel which is soaked in blood, and have been for 15 minutes.

Any ideas why being startled awake would cause this? I have been awaken from bed in the past, but I am usually more pissed than scared. For some reason, I was fucking scared shitless this morning. That's almost what's more concerning to me than the nosebleed - I don't think I have ever been so scared. Must have been some nasty dream, catalyzed by the noise. Still shaking a little, even now.

I call dibs on your guns.

I'd say the adrenaline that caused a blood rush to your head overloaded that vessel and it burst.

You were probably picking your nose in your sleep. Either that or a burglar broke in, punched you in the nose and knocked the picture off the wall as he fled the house.

no, but Christ sweated blood shortly before He was cruxified . Thank God for His sacrifice.

PeteCO,

Seriously though, roll up a cigarette sized piece of paper towel and shove it in your upper lip. Stick another one up your nose. Ice the bridge of your nose. That should get the sucker to stop bleeding. If it doesn't stop in the next 15 min. get your ass to the ER and make sure you didn't burst something vital.

I think I got it to stop bleeding. I swallowed a lot of blod though. Looking around, the carpet (white) has a blood trail that I'l need to clean, and the towel and bathroom sink looks like someone was murdered there.

Wow. Very weird. So much for sleeping in today. I'm still having a hard time typing because my hands are shaking. I never thought that an adrenaline dump could cause blood pressure or blood supply to the head to go up like that. Even my Sig 229 has blood on it.

Sounds like you have a thin walled blood vessel my younger brother had it when he hit the 10 year grow spurt. He would get a nosebleed from most anything that got him excited. He outgrew it for the most part. Never heard of it in an adult though... Probally should see a doctor about it just to be safe.

As for waking up scared probably came from smelling the blood its a standard reaction for most mammals you can't help it.

BTW JFL : Seven days (if you don't get it watch the ring)

Some time back, I was suddenly awakened in the wee hours by a tremendous crash. It sounded like a bookshelf fell over. I was the only one in the house, and knew it. I sprang out of bed and strained my ears for any further clues. Sure enough, I heard the son of a bitch running down the stairs. I grabbed my nightstand gun and dashed out of the bedroom to catch him before he got out the front door.

Much to my surprise there was no one. The house was quiet, all doors and windows secured. After a few moments I realized the sound of someone running down the stairs was actually my pulse pounding in my ears.

The crash that woke me up was my wife's long-suffering closet shelf giving way and dumping a metric assload of clothes and shoes onto the floor.

Thankfully for her at the time, she was out of town.

So, any second thoughts about getting that vessel pressure tested? Things popping in your head are always bad.
Link Posted: 4/18/2006 4:43:18 PM EST
I've never even had a nosebleed before...
Link Posted: 4/18/2006 4:43:46 PM EST
Could this relate back to the gas you huffed in your childhood?
Link Posted: 4/18/2006 4:46:20 PM EST

If by "scared" you mean:

Snorted
Coke
And
Rocked
Every
Day

then, yes.

(Just kidding - I've actually never done any illegal drug, but I've heard that snorting blow can result in weakend tissue in the nose and lots of nose bleeds.)

I once had my nose suddenly start to bleed in the middle of a conversation with another professor in his office.

Talk about completely random.

It wasn't random...they insinuate it everywhere and into everything. Never mind that it cheapens it, it's also annoying.

Who's "they"?

Back to topic: No, never woke up with a nose bleed, but I did get one from smashing my face into the ground via a four wheeler induced flight.

My blood pressure is fine, and it was the same nostril that has bled before when dry and dusty. The whole episode just seemed weird.

Oh, you don't know them...don't worry about it; it's not important.

Whenever I read my old journals I get nosebleeds. The doctor also says that my brain seems to have more memories than my age would account for.
Link Posted: 4/18/2006 4:59:40 PM EST
That would have startled me too, but not to the point of having a nose bleed. I've only had one bloody nose in my life, and it was when I got punched by an older woman.

I was 4 years old. She was 7.

Its only ever happened once.

During field day inspection when I was in school at 29 palms. Company gunny was going through wall lockers, and found some dust or something, and started ripping shit out of the thing and tossing it everywhere in the room. He got my laptop bag and just chucked it right against the concrete wall, and busted my then brand new $2800 latop. I am talking cracked screen, keys broke off of keyboard, lower half of the laptop split in two, making the motherboard partially visible. Yeah, I was a little pissed, I had thoughts about killing that sonofabitch. Life goes on though.

Gunny destroyed your laptop during aTornado?

Whoo, that's BAAAAD. I'd have been pissed.

Yep, he didnt even warm up to it either. Just grabbed the small zip up neoprene case it was in, and chucked it across the room, very hard, hitting the concrete wall. Then he just took off, and did other inspections. I was so pissed after he left, I was sitting there shaking with anger, and my nose started bleeding. I do not think I have ever been that angy since, or any time before.

Here is the kicker - request mast was denied. About the only thing that happened about it was my instructions flipping out on him after company formation one day, but thats it.

not startled or anything, but in Iraq my nose got so dry that my nose started to bleed while I was sleeping. Apparently I bled so long and so much that I woke up with the medic next to my cot. I was covered with blood, my face was unrecognizable. They thought that I woke up, went out of the hanger, and got in a fight and got beaten, and went back to bed.....
