I went out to see if it would mount sideways, and I didn't think that it would work because of pulling the cable too far and twisting it a bit.
I set the bracket in place, then looked for what may work to hold it there. The best I have is an old shelf bracket.

I drilled some holes, to bolt it in place. I also tried to bend the back part down so that I could put the console back on, but I couldn't do it.

That holds it in place, but still doesn't stop it from torquing down/back, so I put a zip tie around the cable to help hold it to that shelf. It still takes two hands to shift, but it's much easier than with it just flopping around.

I didn't try shifting it from the rear, because I was pretty much done in when I finished this part. I'll try that tomorrow.
