They'd probably be appalled if the even saw Red Dawn

Monday's Frankfurter Allgemeine -- the arts and letters section (Feuilleton) -- includes a column by Andreas Platthaus about the use of the term "Wolverine" in the assault. The article features a photo of the actor who played Wolverine is "The X-Men," with the caption: "Saddam's hiding place carried his name: Wolverine, from the movie, "X-Men."

It's not online that I found, but excerpted here.

Predictably, Platthaus goes on and on about Wolverine and the X-Men as being metaphors for America's post September 11 existence. Excerpts and my rocky translation:
[Wolverine's] battered, and yet still a tough fighter, and his triumph is certain, for he possesses supernatural powers of recuperation -- the ideal embodiment for America post September 11.
and . . .
You could interpret the codeword chosen for Saddam's hideaway as reflecting a bitter cynicism. For Wolverine's rage and brutality are consequences of his super powers, which were first given to him through American help.

I absolutely loved the names when I heard them..... operation--"Red Dawn" groups--"Wolverine One" and "Wolverine Two" You have got to love the guys making up these names...sure products of an '80's youth. I was laughing when I told my wife about them. Then there was the blown out tank picture with "Wolverine" written on the side, just like the movie. There must be a lot of fans of that movie over there right now.

Weeeeeeeellllll, if I remember correctly (can't be arsed to find the DVD), the movies starts with a few captions, like "NATO is falling apart" and "In Germany, the Socialists and the Green Party have been elected to govern the country", or words to that effect. Now look at the current German government...

When General Sanchez briefed the press on Sunday morning, he said the operation was code-named Red Dawn. I laughed my ass off at that, because it was a reference to the most right-wing (and first PG-13 movie ever) flick of the 80's's. The objectoves of the operation were to search two locations, code-named Wolverine 1 and Wolverine 2. That's when I really lost it, because the teenage guerrilla group in the movie Red Dawn called themselves "Wolverines" after their high school mascot. There was no doubt whoever planned the mission to capture Saddam Hussein was an unapologetic fan of John Milius's film, Red Dawn. [:D] But the Europeans, who have no pop-culture reference to that masterpiece, assumed it referred to the X-Men superhero Wolverine, who they only knew because of the blockbuster Hollywood movie their superior culture allowed in to pollutte their refinded, cultured minds.

Am I the only one who was just a tiny bit taken aback by the apparent fact that the targets were called "Wolverines?"

Yes; because Team W1 was looking at Location W1, and Team W2 checked out Location W2.

I personally hope that when they go in for the kill on Osama, a fitting operation name should be something like... Irene! Anybody else have some good titles for the operation to kill/capture Osama?
Link Posted: 12/17/2003 2:19:19 PM EDT
From the Volokh blog:
How many prior operations could have captured Saddam, but didn't? We may have been discussing "Operation Tron" or "Operation Breakfast Club" if earlier raids had been successful . . . .

Ok, only you baby boomers out there will get this one: Operation A Goofy Game For Dopey Doctors (Ya know, like the commercial.... oh, forget it!) [:D] Makes you wonder what the Nazi high command thought about all of those Mickeys, Donalds, Popeyes and naked ladies painted on bombers during WWII. Bet they spent a lot of time trying to figure that out. Didn't one of the Luftwaffe aces have Felix the Cat painted on his ME-109? Edited for spelling.

Didn't all of those operations ultimately lead to failure and the subjegation of their perpetrators to nearly 60 years of occupation?

In the Pacific Theater, a B-24 named "The Dragon and it's Tail" was adorned with a HUGE painting covering almost the entire length of the fuselage. It depicted a Dragon and a naked, well endowed woman in a suggestive position. During the war, the flight crew reported that the aircraft was a tremendous distraction for the Japanese pilots. "The Dragon and it's Tail" ,one of the last (if not THE last) flyable B-24s, receintly paid a visit to a local airport for an airshow. Needless to say it STILL gets a lot of attention. I took a picture, but I dare not post it here.....
