As a kid in the 70's I'd occasionally hear about the Cannonball Run, a flat out coast to coast high speed race..After the 70's they quit doing it here..Now apparently the Europeans have similar races modeled after the same idea...If you could go you'd need a car with a high top end and decent fuel consumption probably..What would you take?

E30 M3 like this one

My Tiburon gets pretty good mileage, I might go with it. But assuming I could use any car, I'd definitely go with a Lamborghini Diablo, or maybe a Countache.

DUN DUN DUN! CAPTAIN CHAOS!

I think I'd go with that $1.1 million Bugati Veron, just because 1001hp sounds like fun

That vid looks like it's from the Vancouver to Vegas "Rally" they had last year.
Definately not Europe.

If I was doing something like that I'd use a big Caddy STS, in a low profile color. Speed +lots of room.

I'm not sure what car I would choose, but it would be diesel. Something like an E-class or a 5-series would be perfect... comfortable, no problem reaching speeds of 140-150mph, and get better range than anything else on the road. You would also have the advantage of being inconspicuous. Something like a Carrera 4S or a CL600 would be a blast, but it would just scream "Look at me, I'm a Cannonballer!" But a 5er or E-class? Dime a dozen.

I'd take a Salen S-7 twin turbo painted with a stars and stripes patern with the words 'made in america' across the back.
Link Posted: 2/2/2006 9:34:13 AM EDT
LADA or YUGO
Link Posted: 2/2/2006 9:34:56 AM EDT
I would take my E36 M3. 5th tops out at 155 and gets best fuel economy around 130ish

Mini Cooper S. Winning in a clown car would just make it more fun.

Easy, Corvette.

any year Dodge challenger with a hemi 440 6 pack and a big arse fuel cell

tough call, probly a STi or an EVO... now if i could choose anything tho, it would be an EP3 honda civic, heavily modded tho(suspension and drivline, no ricer wings or shit like that)

Sounds good, but I'd take the version that should be out within the next year or so that has twin intercoolers as well. That version is supposed to produce >1000hp

Soemthing slightly more reasonable: C6 Corvette Z06 or possibly a Cadillac CTS-V

When I "allegedly" used to run cannonball-type events, I used a rental car - everytime.

If you think it's tough running coast to coast, trying doing it round trip.

I'd have to say C6 Z06 if you planned to have only 2 drivers..Probably one of the big BMWs if you planned to have more
Link Posted: 2/2/2006 9:53:48 AM EDT
Aston Martin Vanquish
Link Posted: 2/2/2006 10:00:40 AM EDT
I watched that video, it looks fun as hell!

I would have to take a BMW M3 or M5 or M6. They are designed to cruise at 130MPH for a long time. I don't think any other car can run like that. There are alot of cars that can go fast but not alot that can sustain high speeds for long.

So what races did you "allegedly" run? What car did you allegedly drive? What cars did you "allegedly" drive against?

Link Posted: 2/2/2006 10:44:12 AM EDT
I'd go with a widebody 6 spd Supra with a sungle turbo running about 550-600 horsepower.

I'd do it in my Camaro. I've had it up to 155 and it rode smooth as glass.

Where'd I put that extra $70k?

Mitsubishi Satarion / Chrysler Conquest

While I must agree somewhat with that sentiment, after you drive this those "65" cars seem slow in comparison. The last SL65 I drove left me cold and depressed. I need more seat time in this thing....

No other car I have ever driven even compares. It will accelerate to the horizon in the blink of an eye, and brake hard enough to pop your eyeballs out of your skull. I really miss this car and cannot wait for the owner to return with it. We have $25,000 of dedicated SLR equipment just to service this one car. There is a high liklihood it will be the only one we will have sold. I am the sole technician trained to work on it at my dealer. Incredible is an understatement. Unlike the other hot rod benzes, this one is much more aggressive. It is loud, noisy, and brutal in everything it does. Not soft and cushy like the others. AMG models are quite a bit more aggressive than the regular ones, but this SLR takes it to a level before unexperienced in a Mercedes. I LOVE this car. My first purchase when I win the lottery will be an SLR in silver.
