Remember the guy last week who said he went to college for english?
I too have been exposed to a college education, and I remember mostly all those wonderful coeds and the relief that I would never have to study for a test again when I finally graduated.

That got me thinking about how I have been dazzled by the writing skills and technically diverse knowledge sometimes displayed by the people on this board.
We can't all be Idiot Savants, so where did you get your expertise?

Edited cause I still dont rite good.

I took some Electronics classes and some Physics classes, but never got a degree. I have a hard time learning about things that don't interest me, so I never took my General Ed classes. I learned a lot more in college than some other people I know, I just don't have that piece of paper to prove it.

Went through some technical schools in the US Navy and got out after eight years.  Then I went to school at night. Finally got a BS in Mechanical Technology from the University of Houston.  I have to hand it to the Navy.  After going through their schools I learned how to study and take tests.  That made most of the college courses easy.

Ah-yup.  Done gradiated from UC San Diego way back in '80.  Somehow avoided falling prey to Marxist indoctrination.

I worked as a tekknukul rioter for about 13 years including storyboarding a couple of maintenance comics for the US Army, and technical English lessons for Saudi Arabian soldiers to prepare them for HAWK (air defense missile battery) school.  Then I got a job at a bank and became boring.  But I learned a lot about computers, and in the process of documenting systems transitioned into writing specs, developing test procedures, and a bit of designing user interfaces.

Now I just rant and rave about gun control and stuff.

The last time I was in college I was being "taught" the virtues of socialism, how women were equal to men in sports, and that there is no absolute truth, among other "facts". I wasn't fully prepared for them then but now I can't wait to go back. If my arguments are so good I'll have to take a Womens Studies class to test them. I'll either come out of the psuedo-science class a smarter man or I'll come out an anti whitey, anti millitary lesbian.

College isn't for everyone. Actually, the three richest guys I know never went to college at all. One opened a mobile DJ business and now owns three homes, another owns a carpet cleaning business, and another guy owns a couple of gas stations. They all make at least three times my salary. If you are willing to work day and night for a few years, in my mind the best way is to open a small business of some sort. If you work hard and watch your expenses, you have a lot better chance of making it in the long run than you would as a mere salary-man like myself.

If you want to be a professional, that's a different story. Law, accounting, engineering, etc., all require degrees. However, while an advanced degree has the potential to open more doors for you when you're young, it doesn't necessarily mean you'll make more money in the long run. My girlfriend's sister-in-law has a BS from Harvard, MSCS from Oxford, and PhD in CS from Stanford. She's a researcher at Xerox PARC. Very intelligent woman -- super high IQ. She does very well, but most of the guys I work with make more than her with mere BA/BS degrees. But she enjoys her position as a researcher, so she's happy.

It boils down to how smart you are, how resourceful you are, whom you know, and sometimes just plain luck. A degree is no guarantee of success but for some jobs the recruiters won’t even look at you if you don’t have one.

I am stinking poor and mr. failed dot com goatee head already took my window service duties, 10 of my hours per week, and is trying to elbow in on the only job I am really good at, the frying machine. Lately he has even been trying to turn the girl at work against me with his bullshit lies that I am some anti-government terrorist or something. I never took physics in college, but if he doesn't stop soon I am going to perform a live experiment as to what happens when object x in motion meets object y at rest, where x= my fist and y= his chin.

Why can't you damn people stick to creating valuless net companies and I will stick to making sure that the curly and regular fries don't get mixed up. That is all I ask.

I graduated from one of the greaest party schools in Texas in 1982.  I remember writing computer programs in COBOL and FORTRAN.  Now that does a lot of good. People laugh at my resume' when they see I went to SWTSU and ask if I had fun.  It took me five years to graduate so, I guess so.

I went to a junior college for two years when I realized I had no idea what I wanted to do.. got my AA in communications/media and went to work full-time.  A year later I joined the Navy and went to two years of advanced electronics schools for gun/missile systems.  I agree that the Navy's technical schools are pretty awesome.

Been thinking about going back to college lately to take calculus.. just want to finish it, does that sound strange?  I'm considering getting my BEE but I already make a good living so I'm lacking the motivation there would be if a degree would make me more marketable.

I'm thinking I might just enjoy my 40+ hour cake job and start a business on the side as a creative outlet.  [:D]

I don't want to brag, but I am presently a pro-gun straight A student at a world-renown college. But I'm not saying which one. [:)] If you seen Val Kilmer as Chris Knight in the movie Real Genius, I resemble him sans the male anatomy eraser on my pencil.  I'm no genius.  I just try harder than anybody would expect from me.  I try to go into every class room enthusiastic knowing most of the world probably would die to get a education in this country.

Also I work to pay my bills.  No time to daydream at the library due to lack of free time.  Although I do surf the net for leisure whenever I get the chance.

Hey,what the heck!  I am bragging and proud of it! [:D]  [:D]  [:D]

A.A. from the local CC, A.A.S. from the CCAF(military ) and a B.A.Ed from Eastern Wa. University.  I was going to be an armed school teacher.
Education is the key to a better life, and that is not a joke. Just be very aware of what those teachers are teaching your kids.  As a former certified teacher I can tell you it is not good and quite a bit of it is on purpose.  They do have an AGENDA.
