OOPS! KIDS SEE 'SEX ED': KINDERGARTEN PORNO PEEK (Bloomberg's New York)
NY Post ^ | 6/14/09 | ANGELA MONTEFINISE

Debbie does grade school.

An auditorium full of unsuspecting Brooklyn students –– some as young as 5 years old –– got a surprise lesson in reading, writing and raunchiness on May 29 when hard-core porn was accidentally screened at PS 17 in Williamsburg.

The kindergartners, first-graders and fifth-graders were exposed to a topless woman and sex acts in the 45 seconds the obscene clip played on the jumbo screen –– as shocked teachers screamed, "Don't look at it!" and frantically tried to turn it off.

Finally, one horrified teacher ripped the DVD player's plug out of the wall to silence the smut.

"My son told his friend he saw a naked lady at school," fumed Rona Easton, whose 6-year-old son, Cass, viewed the stunning reel with his kindergarten class. "I thought he was just being silly. It's appalling."

"My daughter is 6 years old; she doesn't need to see that," said another angry parent whose daughter is also in kindergarten. "I don't even like to kiss in front of her because I think she's too young. So I'm very angry."

The five classes were in the auditorium for a "film festival," and were supposed to watch "Camp Rock," a Disney Channel movie starring the Jonas Brothers, according to a letter Principal Robert A. Marchi sent home to parents the day of the incident.

A teacher powered up the DVD player, then walked away to get the G-rated disc.

But the decidedly un-Disney skin flick was already loaded into the machine –– and began to play.

"A very explicit pornographic video came on the screen," Marchi wrote. "This was extremely upsetting to the students and staff members in attendance . . . I am deeply sorry that this episode took place at PS 17. I know that we will make every effort to find out who was responsible for this despicable act."

Parents first heard the DVD player had been locked in the principal's office before the impromptu X-rated screening but were later told it was moved to another office where anyone could have accessed it.

What the holy fuck is wrong with some people?

And while I understand some of the reaction to this, people are going a little over board with their righteous indignation. I have a 7 year old daughter. If she came home and told me what happened that day, I'd actually chuckle over it.

For 45 seconds, unintentionally? No, I really don't. It's not the end of the world and some parents need to get over themselves. The only damage done to the kid, comes from over the top parents who go over the deep end. They essentially "teach" the kid that they were somehow harmed by this.

And if you ever had the pleasure of meeting either of my two children (as many Ohio arfcommers have), you'd reconsider that last sentence.

So which school official was screening porn for their own use after hours and forgot to take home their DVD?

I like how the school is trying to blame it on the 6 year old students since "anyone could have accessed the DVD player".  Could they have accessed it and a screen and viewed porn with no school officals noticing?  If so that makes the school look even worse than having a teacher watching porn after hours.

I went to publik skool so I could be wrong, but it looks to me like if they weren't watching Jonas Brothers movies, they wouldn't be in the lowest 25% of rankings in the state in most, if not all categories.

This is PS 71, not PS 17, which from what I gathered, is the only elementary school in Williamsburg. My guess is the author of the article went to public schools as well.

No kidding.  The point he is making that an "accidental discharge" of 45 secs of porn, does not equal a child being purposely shown porn.  Geez.  Even in the case of the hardest porn EVAR, I don't see the mental health of the child in any danger.

Some of you people can be a bit hard headed.

This is all moot anyway, because you know as well as I do that "hard core pornography" in a news article about children, is the journalistic equivalent of the bolt action machine gun.

Ten bucks says it was just normal porn - and in this context - not that big of a deal, unless parents insist on making it one.

I'll answer this.  If it was child porn, yes, I would be really upset, but not for the reasons you might think.  My outrage would be that someone at that school that is in charge of the well being of my child is a potential threat.

Other than that, I would be irritated at the sheer lack intelligence of the school to keep from accidentally showing some porn, but no more upset than when I was attending the "awards ceremony" at my son's school, and all they got was an envelope with an undisclosed amount of awards in it.

I recall a sleep over at a friends house at about 7 or 8 where we raided his dads stack of playboys in the basement. It was actually pretty boring. I can't imagine 45 seconds of porn having must impact on a pre-pubescent.

I figure that hardcore porn is really only an issue for kids between about 11 and 18 or so. Those are the ages when you don't really have a handle on what is healthy sex and what is fantasy. It can be easy, for girls especially, to get some pretty fucked up ideas about sex if porn is the only teacher. But before that age you don't care about sex and after it, hopefully, you've learned to tell the difference between reality and porno fantasy.

Would I care much if my 6 year old saw some porn accidentally? Not really. Chances are neither would she. If she saw it at 14? Yeah, that'd bother me a bit because I know it would bother her. But I like to think I'd handle it by talking to her about it, and not flipping my shit and suing the school or something equally idiotic.

Oh, I'm just playing devil's advocate on this one.

If I was a parent, I would only be making a big deal out of it if I already had an axe to grind with the school's administration.

Not to deviate but what if one of your 6 to 10 yr old children walked in and saw their mother with her shirt off while getting dressed in the morning???

Should the children immediately be placed in counseling, the mother be registered as a sex offender, and the children removed to foster care???

Or should you yell at the kid to get the hell out of the room and knock first???

I can understand some of their cartoons.  "Donald in Mathmagic Land" is perfect.  So are many of their Ludwig Von Drake cartoons.
And then there's the Jiminy Cricket Enyclopedia or I'm No Fool series of cartoons.

Disney has many Real Nature and other educational cartoons and movies.  Face it; one of the best way to teach somebody that doesn't want to be teached is to do it in a fun way.  Disney excelled there.

Somehow I picture people yelling 'Don't look at it' and someone diving in slow motion towards the plug

I'm just curious as to what level of perverse/hardcore would make you lose your mind.

All porn is not the same.

Lose my mind? Probably none.

This is all moot anyway, because you know as well as I do that "hard core pornography" in a news article about children, is the journalistic equivalent of the bolt action machine gun.

Ten bucks says it was just normal porn - and in this context - not that big of a deal, unless parents insist on making it one.

Like semi-automatic assault rifles with banana clips, and fully automatic revolvers?

"Don't look Ethel!"

The sad thing is, some of these parent wouldn't bat an eye if their kid was exposed to a movie where a guy was stabbed to death or had his head shot off.

Oh, and I agree with the BS flag about the whereabouts of the DVD player prior.  The principal is covering his tracks big time.
