CAIRO (AP) — Egypt's Islamist president unilaterally decreed greater authorities for himself Thursday and effectively neutralized a judicial system that had emerged as a key opponent by declaring that the courts are barred from challenging his decisions.

Riding high on U.S. and international praise for mediating a Gaza cease-fire, Mohammed Morsi put himself above oversight and gave protection to the Islamist-led assembly writing a new constitution from a looming threat of dissolution by court order.

But the move is likely to fuel growing public anger that he and his Muslim Brotherhood are seizing too much power.

I saw earlier that Hamas was claiming victory over the little Gaza deal. This appears to be the victory.

I for one am more shocked than a Vichy police inspector. Never saw this one coming, nope, not at all...

Actually I am a slight bit surprised that it took him this long, and of course the administration won't say an unkind word about it because he's now a hero for being instrumental in getting the cease fire between Hamas and Israel. Plus he'll not be one of those horrible pro-Western, anti-Jihadist, moderate on Israel, secular sort of dictators, he'll be the proper sort since he comes from the opposite end of the spectrum, so he's just perfect for Obama's purposes.

Got me thinking I bet the Izzie's sure are missing Arafat? Seems so simple back in the day all they had to deal with was the PLO.
Now they got Syria, Lebanon, Egypt all in some form of civil war, civil unrest.

Chavez gave himself more power too. This always happens with fascists, commies and islamo fascists.

Can we stop sending them aid now?

Half the country is ridiculed, minimized, ignored and treated like an enemy.

They've already legalized marijuana in two states and will damn sure legalize millions of illegal aliens, which will financially bleed America to destruction.
What will they put on the ballot next? Sex with kids?

The corruption of the Liberal agenda is boundless!

Well the army will line him up on a wall and shoot him once he provokes Israel.

If Morsi doesn't set up pre-agreements with the Egyptian army, I think he'll find himself with a tank on his chest.

The army is the real power in the country and I can't see him just running roughshod all over them.

The real key to this is what's happening behind the scenes and we don't really know what that is.

Nope, the dictator we propped up is gone. We stand aside and let nature take it's course, which is to say we no longer give a fuck.

You left out Iran causing unceasing trouble for Israel. Egypt ain't in a civil war, its consolidating power. The MB is in control without a doubt. Salafists.

I'm betting there's another foreign aid package worth hundreds of millions in the offing for Egypt very soon.

I'm sure there is because for an islamist sympathizer like Obama there really isn't enough that he can do to reward them (even when they spit in our face).

Thankfully, we have the House of Republicans to block that crap (which they did the 500 mil before the election).

They used to say that in Turkey too.

I think Morsi just canned the Army brass. They are the people he ran against in the election for all practical purposes (Mubarak, Sadat and Nasser were all military).

To me it's only a matter of which army of demons will rule that section of hell. Either way, you end up with evil in charge and another evil being kept down by the man.

That's exactly my point. Mubarak, Sadat and Nasser all came from the Army and therefore already had bonds with them. These bonds were strong enough to keep Sadat in power even after he made peace with the Israelis.

I'm not saying that Morsi can't change the direction of Egypt, but he's going to have to check-in and get okays from the army first.

Back in August.

People who think this is not co-ordinated beyond national borders are sadly mistaken IMO.

Nah, Obama will want to stop sending aid to Israel.
Link Posted: 11/22/2012 5:47:18 PM EST
And Obama helped put him in power.

It is an Islamic nation, it can not have democracy because democracy goes against it's culture.

Obama is taking notes. If this works, don't put it past him to declare himself emperor, too.
