I admit I am a bit behind on my SHTF weapon technology. Just to give you an idea I have been using 20 year old  double D-cell Mag lights for my home flashlights. Recently I put a rail system on my AR and purchased a weapon light for it. I found a great deal on a SureFire M600C. This light is rated at 200 lumens with the special head I got. Last night I went outside with the rifle and turned on the light. I cannot beleive how much flashlight technology has advanced. I know I sound like an idiot but I really had no idea how awesome these weapon lights are.

While I was outside with the weapon light I was scanning and looking through the iron sights. Things were getting illuminated pretty good out to about 200 yards. From looking through the sights, it appears I could hit a target at 200 yards pretty easily.  I would imagine an ACOG would make it even better???

What experience do you guys have with shooting at night with a weapon light. How accurate can you be?

Surefires might be the cats ass for carrying around but if something needs beatin, nothing outdoes a 2-3 cell mag light

Weapon lights are for INSIDE the house.  Walking around spotlighting potential bad-guys outside would get you shot.

This. Running around with a known threat outside with your weaponlight on, you're asking to be shot.

And even inside a weaponlight can broadcast your location to an intruder if not used correctly.

Solution - Nightvision for outdoors!

My question in the OP is not focused at all on the best tactics for shooting bad guys. The question is at what distances can you be accurate with your AR and a weapon light? Hunting at night could be a very realistic part of a SHTF scenario.

Inside, there really seems to be such a thing as "too much light"-the reflected light from your typical light colored wall and ceiling will kill your night vision when you turn a powerful light back off.

Gotcha.  I have shot plates at 100-120 yards with a surefireG2LED plus EOTech.  The "range" of the light/rifle package doesn't seem like the right way to describe it.  You can hit anything with a light that you can hit without a light, provided you can see it.  A white 8" plate is going to be easier that a squirrel and so forth, but it will come down the the intensity and focus of your light.

Best thing to do is go at at night under varying conditions and see what you can see, through your sights.
