Thank Almight God for Jupiter. If it weren't for the massive gravitational pull of that lovely gas bag we would have a closer and more frequent near misses. Of course, there is a long list of medium-sized countries that the Earth could do without [;)]

If one of these things hits, I don't want to know before the fact, and I hope the damn thing lands right on top of my head. Ignorance would truly be bliss in this case.

A couple of good sci-fi books to read concerning this subject: 1) Lucifer's Hammer (Niven & Pournelle) - what would it be like if it actually happened? Plus lots of survivalist tips. 2) Firestar (Michael Flynn) - billionaire implements a long-term plan to prevent an asteroid strike.

Would a massive asteroid impact be as devastating as the global warming caused by SUVs? [:E] http://www.jpl.nasa.gov/sl9/back3.html
