The Environmental Protection Agency is scrapping the agency's nearly $1 million in gym memberships as an abuse of taxpayer funds.
"We have ended taxpayer-funded fitness centers at EPA; a program that was costing American taxpayers $900,000 per year," said EPA spokesperson Jahan Wilcox. "Disinvestment in using federal funds for EPA
fitness centers will allow the agency to invest this money in core activities to protect the environment."

The Washington Free Beacon first reported the decision on Monday. EPA Administrator Scott Pruitt vowed to get rid of the gym memberships after the newspaper reported earlier this year that the agency had paid
$15,000 per year for employees in Las Vegas to upgrade to premium fitness memberships at 24 Hour Fitness. This was done even though the employees already had complimentary gym memberships at the University of Nevada's campus in Las Vegas.

Not even a drop in the bucket.  Honestly it's probably not that bad of an expense if the employees are using the memberships.

No loss. The EPA employees that I know certainly don't use the membership.

And if they are staying healthy by hitting the gym then they are staying out of the hospital later in life.

But the gop doesn't give a shit about that.

I love it when they out themselves.

Here is the thing, you can do cardio, and lift weights and all that without paying for a gym membership.  You know, sorta like us taxpayers have had to do because we get taxed too much.

No, a bunch of people say oh I got a free gym membership, go to the gym, and hurt themselves on thebewuioment and then end up with lifelong debilitating injuries.

They get paid enough to pay for own memberships.  From what I have seen salary's are quite inflated.

I hope we see more of this and curtailing pork programs.

If all the waste/fraud was eliminated we would have more than enough for other stuff, i.e. infrastructure, healthcare, military...

Company gym memberships are a waste of money. The people that want to work out will just buy one anyway, everybody else is just kidding themselves. The gyms love it, of course, because all of these employees sign up, never use the facility and have no incentive to cancel because work is footing the bill.

This.  If the employees were using it, during breaks and non-work time to actually get exercise, then it is a good thing.  Knowing the government though you probably had people "working out" for 2 hours during the work day and that isn't counting the 1 hour plus lunch they took.  Who wouldn't like the benefits of a 5 hour work day...plus whatever additional breaks they take.

Exercise is not only healthy but it is good for clearing out the mind so you can focus better.  I wish I had the option as I would work more efficiently many days if I could get some exercise in mid-day.

that's privately earned money, I don't care if a private company pays for their groceries, gym, full insurance, and their wives botox and boob jobs....... gov runs off OUR money.  they should tie the gym thing to their insurance premiums.. no go to gym, insurance costs more.... go to gym, that cost is subtracted from insurance.

also.. if you smoke, drink, or are fat... you should be paying more for insurance, than people who don't.   because people who smoke, drink, and are fat tend to cost insurance companies more.

it may be in your employers best financial interests to provide gym memberships for his employees. if giving you a $9 a month gym membership saves them $300 a month in insurance premiums its stupid not to buy you that membership.

Yep its also why companies will pay for drug and alcohol counseling, support to stop smoking and annual check ups. its called an employee wellness program and it dramatically lowers the employers health insurance premiums.

I can understand a reasonably sized and equipped gym at large offices, but to paying for private gym memberships is a complete screw to the tax payers. Yeah its a drop in the bucket of federal spending, but imagine all these little shings spread across dozens of .gov agencies. Pretty soon your talking gallons, not drops.

Yes, it's a bad expense. It duplicates perks they already have.

How many folks are missing the part about the employees having access to a gym that didn't cost the department anything? The paid one isn't necessary.
