The Environmental Protection Agency is scrapping the agency's nearly $1 million in gym memberships as an abuse of taxpayer funds.
"We have ended taxpayer-funded fitness centers at EPA; a program that was costing American taxpayers $900,000 per year," said EPA spokesperson Jahan Wilcox. "Disinvestment in using federal funds for EPA fitness centers will allow the agency to invest this money in core activities to protect the environment." The Washington Free Beacon first reported the decision on Monday. EPA Administrator Scott Pruitt vowed to get rid of the gym memberships after the newspaper reported earlier this year that the agency had paid $15,000 per year for employees in Las Vegas to upgrade to premium fitness memberships at 24 Hour Fitness. This was done even though the employees already had complimentary gym memberships at the University of Nevada's campus in Las Vegas. http://www.washingtonexaminer.com/epa-scraps-1-million-in-gym-memberships-for-employees/article/2626413 |

Not even a drop in the bucket. Honestly it's probably not that bad of an expense if the employees are using the memberships.
|
|
No loss. The EPA employees that I know certainly don't use the membership.

Bad move...GD has assured me that cutting government employee compensation will descend the country into chaos

Here is the thing, you can do cardio, and lift weights and all that without paying for a gym membership. You know, sorta like us taxpayers have had to do because we get taxed too much. |

They get paid enough to pay for own memberships. From what I have seen salary's are quite inflated.
I hope we see more of this and curtailing pork programs. If all the waste/fraud was eliminated we would have more than enough for other stuff, i.e. infrastructure, healthcare, military... |

Company gym memberships are a waste of money. The people that want to work out will just buy one anyway, everybody else is just kidding themselves. The gyms love it, of course, because all of these employees sign up, never use the facility and have no incentive to cancel because work is footing the bill.

Good. Pay for your own gym membership like everyone else.
Also, most gym memberships go unused. |

Just a drop in the bucket?
Then why try to do anything that can't be done all at once? Fuck that stupid socialist bullshit. |

Are they also selling the workout equipment that the department owns for employee use?

The epa should be sent to foreign countries kinda like we do with the peace corp only for screwing up foreigner's businesses.

WTF gym memberships...I don't care if it's only $100 a year for the whole group, WTF.
That's just the tip of the ice berg government wide I'm sure. |

Was the gym membership part of an employee wellness program that lowered the employers health insurance costs? Will the employers health insurance cost increase in response?

Now cut their personnel by 25% and have most of the rest rescinding EPA mandates.
Then when done cut their personnel another 25-50% |

I can understand a reasonably sized and equipped gym at large offices, but to paying for private gym memberships is a complete screw to the tax payers. Yeah its a drop in the bucket of federal spending, but imagine all these little shings spread across dozens of .gov agencies. Pretty soon your talking gallons, not drops.

I bet the insurance break they got was larger than the amount they spent.

How many folks are missing the part about the employees having access to a gym that didn't cost the department anything? The paid one isn't necessary.
