A “Good Samaritan” who came to an assault victim’s aid in downtown San Mateo yesterday afternoon ended up starting a panic in the area after pulling out a .45 caliber semiautomatic handgun on the victim’s assailant, police said.

The man ended up in jail for assault with a firearm, drawing a weapon in a threatening manner and carrying a loaded firearm while the woman’s assailant faces misdemeanor charges of simple assault and was able to walk away from the scene, police said.

“The Good Samaritan escalated the situation exponentially by pulling out a gun,” said Deputy Police Chief Mike Callagy.

An officer on foot patrol was just a block away and could have easily dealt with the woman’s assault, Callagy said.

Only "a block away"....

So the guy who assaults the women walks, while the guy who pulls a gun to stop the assault get's charged up the fucking ass.

This. If the guy was carrying illegal, why put yourself in that situation. Save it for when you get robbed.

I wonder if he handcuffs too.

Well the article did say the guy chased after the attacker, and then pull his gun, not break up the attack by drawing his gun.

Stil, California....

Wait, so the guy pulled a gun on somebody because they bumped into someone?  Did I read that right?

If anyone sees a San Mateo PD officer getting curb stomped, shot, dragged, or stabbed... keep on walking or driving..... help is probably just a block away.

Might have been different elsewhere in the state. That is south bay and not gun friendly. Farther the away you get from the bay, the more gun friendly the state becomes. I was in San Mateo last week on work. But my CC piece stayed holstered.

Not sure but I might have left that one alone. Sucks for the guy trying to help. Hope he had a CCW
.

ETA- after reading the article, the guy pulled a gun on a fleeing perp. Bad pull. This would have been the same result in any state. Thanks for being that guy to bring more Ca hate this morning.

OP you left this part out......

Viola was driving his car on Third Avenue and witnessed a 57-year-old San Mateo woman being assaulted near San Mateo Drive and asked her if she was OK, police said.

She indicated she was OK and then told Viola that the assailant was running down the street, police said.

The Good Samaritan then allegedly caught up to the man, parked his car and confronted the assailant with a firearm.

Yes, but more importantly it's an example of how liberal/socialist governments frown on citizens who want to be independent of the system.  They can't allow that and will happily make you a criminal, not only to force you to be dependent but to make you an example to others with independent thoughts.
