Shooting death blamed on soldier

Associated Press

NEW YORK — A soldier who authorities said fired his gun in the air after drinking at a relative’s house while on leave from the Army was arrested on charges that he accidentally killed a mother of two, prosecutors said.

Pvt. Danny Carpio, 23, was being held pending arraignment on charges of second-degree manslaughter and criminal possession of a weapon in the fatal shooting, Queens District Attorney Richard Brown said Thursday in a news release.

The 28-year-old victim was standing at her fifth-floor window when the bullet struck her head, killing her instantly. Prosecutors identified the victim as Selina Akthela, though police gave a different spelling for the last name — Akthel — and published reports said it was Akhdar.

Idiot deserves whatever he gets. Sad for the kids who lost their mom to an idiot.

Guess he really wasn't shooting into the air then huh?

Fucking moron should be gassed.  Anyone who shoots a gun off into the air is the epitomy of irresponsibility.....especially in a city environment.

Sounds more like he was shooting into a high-rise.

It is not without surprise that a falling bullet can kill.  Read Lawrence of Arabia's book, "Seven Pillars of Wisdom."  He recounts the tale of the Revolt in Arabia and after one incident, how the Arabs joyfully discharged their guns into the air.  Several camels and an Arab was killed.  Opps.

I don't think it was falling.

Except this wasn't a falling bullet.  It was a rising bullet.  It looks like the idiot was on the ground and fired up into the air - striking the victim who was on the 5th floor.

New York woman fatally shot by U.S. soldier while standing at window

NEW YORK (AP) - A U.S. soldier who authorities said fired his gun in the air after drinking at a relative's house while on leave from the army was arrested on charges he killed a mother of two, prosecutors said.

Pte.

Prosecutors identified the victim as Selina Akthela, though police gave a different spelling for the last name - Akthel - and published reports said it was Akhdar.

"As a result of his thoughtless action, a young woman is now dead and her two small children must face the difficult and heartbreaking chore of adjusting to life empty of their mother's presence," Brown said in a statement.

Brown said Carpio had been drinking at a relative's house before he met with friends outside a Queens apartment complex late Wednesday. Carpio fired his gun three or four times in the air, striking the woman once, Brown said.

The victim's husband, Golam Maola, said he was on the phone with relatives in Bangladesh just before midnight Wednesday when he heard two shots, then found his wife lying in a pool of blood.

The couple's two young children, also in the apartment at the time of the shooting, were unharmed.

Family friends said they had been planning a surprise birthday party for the victim, who was to have turned 29 on Dec. 31.

Prosecutors said Carpio has addresses in Killeen, Texas, and Queens. A spokesman for the district attorney's office said prosecutors would not have information about a lawyer for Carpio until his arraignment.

Army spokeswoman Betsy Weiner said she was looking into the matter.

Stupid is as stupid does. Probably watched too many middle easterners fire their weapons in the air, he probably thought it would be a good idea too.

He was from Queens? What nationality was he? Some where from the Mid-east is my guess, because it wouldn't surprise me.

Well I could be wrong...Carpio...maybe just a moron. Hope he realizes what he's done.

He'll have plenty of time to think about it.
