NEW YORK — A soldier who authorities said
fired his gun in the air after drinking at a relative’s house while on leave from the Army was arrested on charges that he accidentally killed a mother of two, prosecutors said.
Pvt. Danny Carpio, 23, was being held pending arraignment on charges of second-degree manslaughter and criminal possession of a weapon in the fatal shooting, Queens District Attorney Richard Brown said Thursday in a news release.
The 28-year-old victim was standing at her fifth-floor window when the bullet struck her head, killing her instantly. Prosecutors identified the victim as Selina Akthela, though police gave a different spelling for the last name — Akthel — and published reports said it was Akhdar.
