She is awesome.  I couldn't make it through the first couple of bars without fucking it up.

And you wonder why their kids call you by your first name.

That is an impressive cover. She doesn't have all the intricacies portnoy does but it's damn good.

I'm always humbled by the amount of talent I don't have.
It's OK though, I don't mind listening.

Agreed.
Not many professional percussionists have the intracacies of Portnoy, and that young gal is far less than half their age.  I'm impressed

I have a sick take the time > freebird live jam of theirs somewhere

Not long ago, we had a thread here in GD about 'almost was' bands (or something like that).
Good bands that never hit it big, in other words.
DT was never really 'mainstream' for reasons I cannot fathom.

The virtuoso musicianship of Dream Theater still melts my face off, going on thirty years later

She's good. If all making it in the music industry took was skill however there would be a lot more famous drama queens musicians.

DT was an anomaly.  Musical talent out the ass, but the people who listened to DT had very specific tastes in music.  Hard to describe those people.  They weren't metal heads so to speak.  They were their own sub-genre.

DT is a great band. Metal without the annoying growling.

You're probably right (I guess I'm included in that sub-genre).

I've seen DT live many times.
I highly recommend it

Yep; that's turned me off to some bands that I would probably otherwise be a fan of (Lamb of God...).

ETA: Liquid Tension Experiment is also great IMO.

correct--the specific sub-genre is called 'progressive metal'.

If you guys are into these incredible lady drummers, there is a little Japanese jazz drummer that is utterly incredible.  Her name is Kanade Sato.

Best I can do is hotlink:

She didn't do all the hat rolls in the break but she actually did a 'true' snare roll instead of a stick drag in one spot.  Interesting. I love how loose she is when she plays.

She's completely badass.

Spot on. I even lack the talent to come up with such a true statement myself.

There's plenty of examples of kids replicating Petrucci's guitar work.
It's one thing to learn and perform. Another altogether to actually compose.
